Spoilers ahead for the season finale Criminal Minds: Evolution“Dead End”, so watch out if you haven’t seen it!
After nine episodes focused on his season UnSub Elias Voit, this season of the quasi-revival Criminal Minds: Evolution delivered a tumultuous finale that ultimately saw serial killer Zach Gilford’s mastermind arrested and his family finally learned of his sinister double life. The episode also delved into the mystery surrounding the super-secret government project dubbed “Gold Star,” and showrunner Erica Messer revealed that season 2 will explore this deeper mystery using Voit for his portrayal of Hannibal Lecter.
Gold Star was born when Assistant Manager Bailey tried to negotiate Rossi’s safe return, and it quickly became apparent that his backstory was important enough that no one could bring it up to others who might be. And whatever the scheme is, it seems Voit is the only person who knows it inside out, as he brutally shot and killed Bailey on the spot to create such a situation.
Now that Voit has been arrested, with Rossi safe and sound again (if he still has visions of his dead wife), Erica Messer tells him Variety that Gilford’s twisted villain will still play a role next season, with his Gold Star intel giving him Hannibal Lecter-style control over BAU agents. According to Messier:
Well, we expect to have a lot of Zach in the season and treat him, to put it simply, like our Hannibal Lecter. Know the gold star information. The team knows some already, as Lewis and Prentice told Rossi the gold star wasn’t in the report, and it should have been because Bailey was acting weird when he said it. So you’re already hinting at something. What is Gold Star? Voit knows what Gold Star is, because she said it out loud, and they heard it out loud. She then uses this knowledge as power in his captivity.
It’s clear that everything Voit knows about Gold Star is important enough to members of the government to keep him safe and content while in custody, presumably to prevent him from sharing with others. (Though finding out more may be the BAU’s goal.) It’s unclear whether Messer’s reveal means he’ll be a major plot point in Season 2, but even if that’s not the case, his continued presence is further evidence. that Criminal Minds: Evolution is different from its CBS counterpart by means of a serialized storyline. Not only has this season primarily focused on one UnSub story, with all the weekly cases related to Voit, but now that story will seep into future episodes in a big way.
Zach Gilford certainly killed it as Elias Voit, pun intended, and hopefully seeing the aftermath of all of that will be a story explored in Season 2. Despite his creepy ways, he tried to protect Zach, his wife and daughters for as long as possible. . it was possible, but in the end it wasn’t enough. The latest episodes of Criminal Minds: Evolution It was fun watching him to see what his next move would be, and now that he’s been caught and his family probably wants nothing to do with him, it will make him even more determined to do whatever he’s planned. And it wouldn’t be surprising if that somehow implied what Gold Star is.
Meanwhile, Reid and Simmons’ return is on hold as Matthew Gray Gubler and Daniel Henney are busy with other projects. It’s still possible they could make cameo appearances in the form of video calls or something similar, but hopefully fans can still expect them to be mentioned from time to time. I wonder… do it They Do you know what Gold Star is about?
