Marc Maron has become one of the biggest names in comedy of the past decade with the success of his popular podcast, WTF with Marc Maron. Although this has allowed him to regularly release comedy albums and stand-up specials, such as the next one from dark to dark on HBO, has also afforded him opportunities outside the typical stand-up comedy trail, such as his critically acclaimed performances on shows such as SPLENDOR and movies like the Oscar nominee To Leslie. Despite the accolades, these performances lack major awards, which, in the end, suits Maron perfectly, as he’s earned the respect of a handful of Oscar-winning legends.
I recently met with Marc Maron to discuss From dark to dark, and when the subject of the prize race came up, she provided her unique perspective and a delightful anecdote about an exchange she had with Frances McDormand during her career at SPLENDOR (which can be streamed with a Netflix subscription):
I don’t know, you know, how pricing works. I know it’s not always level. I was nominated for a SAG Award, which I thought was good enough for my first appearance in a role that wasn’t mine. But I can’t pay attention to everything. I haven’t put any money into a campaign. I don’t think I had, you know, a publicity stunt behind me. I was happy with the SAG nomination and I was happy that Frances McDormand, Frances McDormand came up to me at the SAG Awards and said, “I love you.” And I’m like, ‘oh, do you listen to the podcast?’ And she says, ‘No, on this show. You are fantastic.’ And I’m like, ‘well, it’s like winning.’
A SAG Award nomination is nothing to scoff at, but getting the endorsement of legend Frances McDormand is the next best thing. It’s nice to know that Maron is always in awe as she interviews the world’s biggest celebrities on her her own podcast, constantly spilling great stories about stars like George Clooney and Brad Pitt.
More recently, Maron has received rave reviews for her performance in to Leslie, what you can stream now . His co-star Andrea Riseborough was nominated for an Oscar and the grassroots campaign led to an investigation within the Academy fortunately resolved . However, when it came to Maron’s performance, the lack of major award nominations was made up for by props from another legend, Kate Winslet. She went on to say this:
Kate Winslet said a lot of nice things about me for To Leslie. I posted a video on my Instagram. It was another – it’s like, better than an award, really… It’s not my destiny to win an award, I don’t feel like it. And, you know, I have to live with it. I do not know.
They Oscar 2023 nominees list is stacked, so we’ll see if Andrea Riseborough e to leslie you can take this thing all the way.
