Minor spoilers ahead of season 4 part 1 of You! Please read carefully!
Penn Badgley is back as stalker Joe Goldberg in the fourth season of Netflix. You. With the series turning the tables on Joe this time around, as he is now the one being hunted down as people left and right are being murdered in London, there is always something new to come for each season. However, showrunner Sera Gamble is opening up about the future of the series and how long she plans to keep Joe’s story.
The Lifetime series turned Netflix has been a huge success for the streaming giant, which is just one of many Penn Badgley projects that have drawn people to him. With Season 4 Part 2 of the stalker drama slated for March, Sera Gamble says DAY his plans for a potential season 5 and when fans might expect the series to end:
We have an idea for Season 5 that we’re excited about. It was never anyone’s intention to handle this in the field. When we’re done, we’re done. And we will pack it. Even in early discussions with Penn, the idea wasn’t to produce forever episodes; it’s like we’ve told the whole story. And while I feel like tonally, we’re very different and we’re not trying to sell Joe as some kind of serious hero. It’s a show in line with these one man shows with a guy who does more and more bad things. What’s great is that when his story arc is over, so is the show.
Although the cast of You has taken over this season, I guess there comes a time when it’s time to say goodbye. However, with Season 4 unfolding, there seems to be more to come, and the fact that Sera Gamble has a plan for Season 5 is welcome news. As such, fans shouldn’t worry about Joe’s arc ending anytime soon.
Meanwhile, this new format of YouThe release of could be the future of the series, depending on what happens in the future. Season 4 it’s divided into two parts, with five episodes each, and while it sounds a bit boring, it works. Sera Gamble mentioned the benefits of split seasons and how easy it was for her and Greg Berlanti to get away with:
Netflix contacted us. The facility split sharply mid-season because [exec producer] Greg Berlanti and I have written so many old school midseason thrillers [broadcast] television.
You it is random and has been known to end in a few suspenseful moments. So having a parting anywhere in the middle of the season creates yet another fun anticipation for fans. Also, having an even number of episodes, it seems to work perfectly, giving fans more time to absorb everything they just saw in Part 1 and keep them on their toes until the end of Part 2.
Season 4 of You It’s been more of a mystery thus far, and after the reveal in episode 5 of who’s behind it all, it should be interesting to see what happens in the second half of the season. Luckily, since Sera Gamble seems to have more things lined up, I don’t think fans need to worry about Joe just yet.
Watch Season 4 Part 1 of You now with a Netflix subscription. Part 2 premieres on Thursday, March 9, and based on Gamble’s comments, it looks like there could be another season or two in the future. Also check out Netflix’s 2023 TV show to see what else is coming to the streamer this year.
