A pharmacist secretly prepares oil for the coronation of Carlos III for 8 months

A pharmacist spent eight months making the oil that will be used at the coronation of Carlos III in May. It was based on a recipe from the Bible.

The sacred oil that will be used at King Charles III’s coronation in May has been brewed in secret for eight months in the central UK city of Hull, British media report.

Mark Hutton, a pharmacist and former pastor, was based on a secret recipe dating back to the 17th century and Charles I. According to The Telegraphit is a “modern reinterpretation” of an oil imagined by Moses.

This oil, whose recipe can be found in the Bible, is composed of myrrh, cinnamon and olive oil. The exact recipe is one of the UK’s best kept secrets.

“It was worth it”

Mark Hutton, 66, said he worked hard after hours to get ready for the coronation on May 6. He spent months searching Europe and the world for the ingredients needed to make the oil.

“I know it was a secret, but for me to make this coronation oil, not only as a pharmacist, but as a former churchman, with the Bible in mind, its history and its meaning, it was worth it,” he said.

Sealed in plastic bottles

The holy oil was placed in plastic bottles that were sealed. They are kept under lock and key in the basement of John Bell & Croyden Pharmacy, located in central London. The company has worked with the royal family for more than a century.

This sacred oil will be used at the coronation, when the king swears to uphold the law and the Church. The monarch is then anointed with oil, crowned and invested with regalia before receiving homage from his subjects.
