In front of Letitia Wright return to his role as Shuri in the MCU in Black Panther: Wakanda foreverthe actress plays in the biographical drama the silent twins. In the final role of Wright, she plays June Gibbons, one of identical British twins with a gripping but heartbreaking true story told in Marjorie Wallace’s 1987 novel. In discussing the role of June, Wright compared the role to that of a Marvel hero.
When Gossipify recently spoke to Letitia Wright about her role in the silent twins, the actress explained why there’s a different pressure when it comes to playing a living person than a beloved cartoon character. In her words:
Both are really difficult. I always try to tell the truth in every role I play. Obviously there is more than one responsibility [in The Silent Twins] because there is a life of someone that you portray on the screen. And I think it’s important to be sensitive and do whatever you can to do justice and bring their story to life in a way that they like, you know, and it’s never easy. But luckily I try to be as professional as possible and give it my all every time I go to the set and luckily this is now part of the collective work that I am really proud of.
the silent twins tells the story of the Gibbons twins from an early age, daughters of Caribbean immigrants who moved their families to Wales. As illustrated in the film, Jennifer and June struck a pact together at a young age to communicate only with each other and remain silent with the rest of the world. As a result, they face various struggles, which later lead to them being sentenced to a psychiatric hospital for several years.
Wright shared with New York post that the silence of the twins was a “protest” against the “systemic racism they experienced as children” as the only black children in their community. June Gibbons is still alive, which creates an added responsibility for Letitia Wright to tell her story in a way that is sensitive to her life and the struggles June and Jennifer have faced in their lives.
Wright must have been hoping for the direct role as the beautifully directed film by Polish director Agnieszka Smoczynska received a “stamp of approval” from June Gibbons, according to her interview with Essence .
