Kevin Smith returns this week to his ViewAskew universe, also returning to the place where it all began: the New Jersey convenience store that frames the employees franchising. Employees III joins Dante (Brian O’Halloran) and Randal (Jeff Anderson) as they face the latter suffering from a devastating heart attack. much of this is modeled on Smith’s personal experience with the widower who almost committed suicide. But in a recent appearance on Official Gossipify ReelBlend Podcast Smith also compared Employees III with a bang Top Gun: Maverickand his reasoning makes a lot of sense.

We’re definitely not going to do business with Maverick. But I feel like we’re taking advantage of the same thing that made success. I’m not talking about Tom Cruise, of course. This is component number one. But there was a factor of nostalgia and sentimentality at work that benefited from this movement, which pushed it over the edge. It didn’t just play like a regular Tom Cruise blockbuster. People were returning, and there is a reason for that. It made them feel something. If you can make him feel something? … In the case of Top Gun: Maverick, they were looking for a Top Gun sequel and, in the meantime, they got something more. Now they will follow you to the ends of the Earth. And so, the same with us. I’ve been warning people for months. I say, ‘It’s a funny movie, but bring your handkerchiefs. And people say, ‘Why? Why are you going to masturbate? ‘ I’m like, ‘Yes. And then you’ll cry in the same cloth. It will be very uncomfortable. But yes, it’s an emotional question.
Kevin Smith goes to the heartstrings Employees III. Which makes sense, since his recent heart attack drove him to finally get to the point and do this sequel, to end the Clerks saga. Saga? Okay, that’s generous, but the commitment of Smith’s fans to these stories and this universe is complete and total, and they will follow him, as Smith comments, to the ends of the earth until they finish telling these stories.
