After America’s Got Talent’s Mayyas dance group won season 17, host Terry Crews shared how close the vote was.

Spoiler ahead of season 17’s finale America has talent.

Season 17 of America has talent finished, and the end of two hours brought back AG icons like ventriloquist Darci Lynne Farmer, as well as well-known faces like comedian Lace Larrabee before host Terry Crews started taking out actors. The competition was fierce and everyone thought the top eleven were the top three of pole dance Kristy Sellars, country singer Drake Milligan (which brought a fan favorite song ), and the Mayyas dance group, winner of the Golden Bell. After a few tense minutes towards the end, Crews broke the big news: after a close vote, Mayyas was the season 17 champion!

The Mayyas are the season 17 champions

Although the final eleven were filled with incredibly talented performers, the all-female Lebanese dance company that took home the grand prize was no big surprise. Sofia Vergara gave them her golden bell after their audition (and they classified themselves as the the most likely winner of the gold buzzer win the first prize). Made up of around 40 Lebanese women of different ages, they won many challenges to win the million dollar award and Las Vegas stage show.

Simon Cowell called Mayyas’ final performance “incredible” and “worldwide”, while Howie Mandel, who gave pre-teen singer Madison Taylor Baez her golden bell, called them his ” favorite act “on America has talent. Heidi Klum had the foresight to say it was “what sounds like a million dollar deed”. As for Sofia Vergara? She said “their show was spectacular and she gave me goosebumps” from the first moment she saw them.

This band’s win wasn’t the biggest surprise in prime time, but how close was the vote? Terry Crews shared some thoughts with Gossipify and other outlets after the finale.

How close was the final grade for season 17?

In an exciting development, the first three were three completely different types of artists. Singer Drake Milligan was one of the first contestants all season to advance to the finals after the first week of qualifying. with his country song “Kiss Goodbye All Night”, while Kristy Sellars did the pole dance to a completely unexpected new level with their acrobatics combined with spotlights and storytellers. And then of course there were the Mayya dancers. When Terry Crews joined Heidi Klum and Howie Mandel to speak to the press after the final, the host shared that Mayyas didn’t win by a huge margin. He said:

I have to say something about tonight. The fact that Drake Milligan, who scored two number one hits, finished in third place will show you just how close the vote was. You know what I mean ? Oh, he was close enough, man. That’s the problem, because any of those acts could have won it all, which is crazy.

Terry Crews hasn’t come up with exact numbers, but it seems that it all boils down to whether Mayyas, Kristy Sellars, or Drake Milligan would be named champions at the end of the night. If ever there was proof that even the best acts of a season need all their fans to vote, it’s the news that Milligan and Sellars have formed a bond!

Of course, I don’t know if many people would say someone deserved it more than Mayyas. Not only have they stood out from the rest this season, but they’re incredibly original even in the grand scheme of a show that’s been running for nearly twenty seasons already. His dances are choreographed to the smallest detail and performed with such skill and grace that I can imagine that his play will be a huge success in Las Vegas.
