Ethan Hawke recalls how he “crashed” his Moulin Rouge audition before losing the role to Ewan McGregor

As we all know, one of the The best interpretations of Ewan McGregor plays the young poet Christian in the work of Baz Luhrmann Red Mill! But did you know that Ethan Hawke could show off his singing skills and act alongside Nicole Kidman? The Childhood The actor remembers the time he “crashed” his own Red Mill! audition before losing to Ewan McGregor.

Released in 2001, Red Mill! is the unfortunate love story between a young English poet and a cabaret actress. To say that Ethan Hawke could have been part of the Red Mill! problem singing “Whatever Happens”. In an interview with ScreenRant Hawke explained how he thought he was auditioning Red Mill! was “one of the best auditions of [his] life. He explained:

Ewan doesn’t like it because he’s embarrassed, but I did one of the best auditions of my life for Moulin Rouge. I didn’t get the role. I crashed that audition. And that shows how much I love Ewan’s work. I still went to see the film on opening day and loved it. So, I got over it. But I will say that someday we will see this audition and people will reconsider.

Wow, I’d love to see this audition! The closest I’ve seen Ethan Hawke sing was his Oscar-nominated performance in Childhood as the budding musician father of the young protagonist of the film. Hawke wasn’t actually the only actor to lose the role of Christian. A bit done behind the scenes Red Mill! is that Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger almost got the role . While Luhrmann praised the two actors’ singing, they were both in their early twenties, which would have been too big an age difference for the then 33-year-old actor. This creative director was looking more for a feeling of Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman.

Although it may have been underwhelming for the The society of dead poets the actor did not nail the musical role, his career did not suffer. In fact, one of the Hawke’s best performances that same year he was in training day, where he received his first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. I’m sure Red Mill! It would have been a completely different movie if there had been this Golden Globe nominee. I just can’t imagine him having the same vocal range as McGregor, but again, I’d need to see the audition footage to be sure.

And then fate gives you a different hand when you’re ready to work with yours Red Mill! competitor. McGregor and Hawke play together in the Apple TV + movies Raymundo and Ray, which is about two half-brothers with a complicated relationship who meet at their father’s funeral. This comedy-drama had its world premiere at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival and will also premiere in the “World Cinema” section of the 27th Busan International Film Festival. So at least we know how Ethan Hawke could have channeled his character’s frustration just thinking about losing to his co-star!

There doesn’t seem to be any bad blood between Ethan Hawke and Ewan McGregor in real life. Both actors have had successful careers playing the roles that fate brought them. If you want to see these talented actors sharing the screen together for the first time, add Raymundo and Ray to your checklist on October 21.
