True Lies stars Steve Howey and Ginger Gonzaga talk about their ‘crazy level of chemistry’ for new CBS spy drama

the long awaited true lies The show finally aired on CBS in its 2023 television schedule, and the network hasn’t been shy about promoting the new series. Inspired by James Cameron’s 1994 film of the same name, this new true lies stars Steve Howey and Ginger Gonzaga in roles originally played by Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis. With showrunner Matt Nix discussing the importance of finding the perfect leads, Howey and Gonzaga discussed their “crazy level” of chemistry as Harry and Helen Tasker!

Even for those unfamiliar with the 1994 film, CBS trailers true lies it only indicates that Harry and Helen’s marriage will be the focus of the new series. When Steve Howey and Ginger Gonzaga spoke to Gossipify as a couple about the show and found the right kind of chemistry, they had nothing but good things to say. Gonzaga shared:

Steve and I have incredible chemistry, and I’ve had it with other actors, but what’s rare and special about this show is that he and I are, in almost every aspect of this craft, the perfect yin and yang. . We’re the perfect team…and our showrunner isn’t always around, so we’re in charge. We balance with true north itself in a very unique way. We’re both alphas, we’re both leaders, but we’re both super protective, so we protect the cast. We want to make sure their characters are there, and I’ve never experienced that. They are a perfect team and will definitely be my friends and family for life.

Ginger Gonzaga came to true lies with a lot of television experience, including a role in Disney+ She-Hulk: Lawyer just last year. While the actress explained that she once had “crazy” chemistry with actors, her dynamic with Steve Howey is something special. Regardless of what the future holds for the show itself, the actress is hopeful that her bond with her co-star will last a lifetime.

it certainly sounds like true lies I found the recipe for success by finding songs that balance each other! In fact, the actress shared a specific example of how they balance each other out on set. gonzago said:

I’m a morning person, I walked in and Steve said, “Uh, I haven’t gotten up yet.” And I ride! [laughs] It’s like, ‘Ginger, we will miss you at 5:00.’ And at 5:00, I’m tired! So Steve takes over and takes us. Sometimes he’s the straight man [and] sometimes i’m the straight man. Sometimes Helen is stupid because she is anxious, sometimes Harry is stupid because he says, “What is my wife doing?” We were reinventing the wheel with the speed and difficulty of manufacturing, and it wouldn’t have been possible without this team. I’ve never experienced this before and I’m very grateful for it. It’s really cool.

It must be a solid working relationship if a morning person and a night owl can work so well together! Even though the new CBS show is billed as a drama, there will be elements of humor as worlds collide. How can you not burst out laughing when a super spy’s world and her home life suddenly start to overlap? Helen will surely have her skills too to bring into Harry’s world.

According to Steve Howey, he knew from a chemistry read with Ginger Gonzaga that she was the right actress to play Helen. true lies. She wasn’t the first person he read to play Helen to her Harry, but she immediately stood out, as she explained:

The chemistry reading was amazing. I got to read with several different Helens, and Ginger came through at the end and really blew everyone away. I was riding in her wake. You came with so much energy, and I told him and I repeat: you could be a genius. I’m not saying that just because I don’t like it. NO. [laughs] Someone who makes me laugh is a rarity. It is true. She was funny as soon as I met her. She had her point of view and is a good person. There is nothing hostile about that… It would have been such a different experience if she had been a different Helen.

Talking about saving the best for last, apparently! Ginger Gonzaga made an instant impression on Steve Howey and others during the casting process. From the laughter and banter of the stars during the interview, it’s clear her humor has lost none of her allure for her co-star. They Shameless the student went on to explain how dynamic they are as a duo true lies:

I don’t think we could have released it. [without her], because those days where we worked every day, all day, and I’d do physical stunts because I wanted to, she’d come in and we’d all be tired and she’d make a joke and I’d be like, ‘Okay let’s go -y.’ So, every time I’ve worked with Ginger, it’s been a pleasure because she sets the mood.

Harry Tasker as a spy means a lot of action sequences and Howey decided to do his own physical stunts. Presumably, Helen won’t get as many gunfights and chase sequences as her husband (at least initially), but obviously Gonzaga still helped his co-star while filming those scenes. While she may not have known how well they would work together long-term in reading chemistry, she knew from the start that she was the right person for the show, as she said:

What you see is what you get. She wears her heart on her sleeve. She’s an empath, so she’s taking advantage of everything and I was like, “Please drive when you want and I’ll drive when you need me.” And then she took my place. I tried to succeed him. The synergy that was created from the first test… I thought: ‘Involve her, please’.

Fortunately, looking forward to seeing Steve Howey and Ginger Gonzaga join forces true lies (opens in a new tab) Is almost finished. The new series airs Wednesday, March 1 at 10 p.m. ET on CBS.
