While other comics may turn their blockbuster into a stoner comedy franchise, Gaffigan throws in a surprising amount of drama, and now he’s explaining the thought process behind him choosing these projects.
Jim Gaffigan’s new film Linoleum is a wonderfully thought-provoking sci-fi drama you wouldn’t expect from the guy whose most famous job is dissecting the Hot Pockets theme song. I spoke with the comedian to celebrate the film’s release, and when the topic of how she picks his projects came up, he had this to say:
It’s about, does the character have a point of view? Drive the story? Can I add value to this? And I know that sounds very esoteric, but there are things that I turned down that I think about, you know, would I have fun on set? Insurance. Know. But I have five children. I’m quite busy. I want the character to bring some depth. That’s probably why I steer clear of comedies just because I enjoy making them, but they’re not as satisfying as playing a character that’s going on a lot.
Jim Gaffigan has always displayed great integrity when it comes to his projects, so it makes sense that he’s a little picky. For example, you have chosen to terminate The Jim Gaffigan Show before the third season simply because the story was created in his head.
