Magnum PI star talks feeling more ‘connected’ with fans after NBC renewal and comeback challenges

Magnum IP came to NBC in 2023 TV premiere schedule for its fifth season, with Thomas Magnum and Co. returning to prime time following the show’s surprise cancellation by CBS in May 2022. Magnum IPwas a hit on its home network, CBS had it he decided to step down from the ax after four seasons , which resulted in fans spending nearly two months campaigning for a save from another platform. Amy Hill, who plays cultural curator Kumu, opened up to Gossipify about feeling a new connection with fans with NBC’s revamp, and how coming back hasn’t been easy.

NBC is now Magnum IPis at home on Network TV, and enough Season 5 episodes have aired thus far for fans to realize how well the show picked up where it left off in Season 4. The cast also got back to work after seeing the magnums The fandom goes to great lengths for many weeks to campaign for a ransom. When Amy Hill spoke to Gossipify about playing Kumu, she shared how knowing how interested fans are in the series has given her a fresh perspective:

You see the numbers, but they’re just numbers, and you’re like, ‘Wow, how many people watch this every week? This is big. But you can’t imagine them as human beings, individuals… Even though they DM us and twitter us and stuff, you don’t know them very well, and I felt like I really felt more connected to the supporters. , after starting the petition, they put up billboards. I felt like I knew who they were, and then I felt more obligated to try and take care of them… That’s fine, and we have fans in the strangest of places. I don’t know exactly where we broadcast, but apparently we have fans in Brazil, Japan, France and the UK. I don’t know how I don’t know how it all works. it’s moving

For Amy Hill, seeing fans come out to push for a Magnum IP the redesign helped her see them as more than just ranking numbers. She also found that the show had followers around the world, many of whom had the passion (and determination) to make it place the work in season 5 including the resulting contribution to the fund a “SAVE MAGNUM PI” billboard in Times Square !

the cast members he reacted when fans received the billboard on social media during the summer, when it was still a few weeks before the official news of the rebirth It has been announced. When I told Amy Hill that the movement needed to save Magnum IP felt very real and powerful after fans received the billboard, she replied:

Oh yes! I don’t know how people do it. They put their money on the line to do it. How do you do it? How did they connect to each other? I don’t know, but these billboards aren’t cheap, and it can’t be just one or two. [fans]. There must have been a lot of fans who got together and put in the money.

The loss of Magnum IP it was enough to gather fans from all over the world to finance a billboard, and Amy Hill does not miss this gesture. We may never know how much fan support impacted the show’s return; star Jay Hernandez had to Keep a tight grip on what you knew last year, while the cast was still waiting to find out if the series would have a future or not.

The period between the Season 4 finale in early May 2022 and the Season 5 premiere in February 2023 was the longest hiatus in the series’ history. Magnum IP Renaissance. Amy Hill explained what it was like to pick up where he left off after such a long hiatus from playing Kumu, saying:

We had a long hiatus when the pandemic broke out. We usually start in July and don’t start until September, so we had this experience of, you know, “Are we back? Because when there was the pandemic, we didn’t know what was going to happen to the people who made television. And this was different, because we didn’t know if we’d ever come back, and then NBC came to get us. It’s always like, how are we going to meet the needs of the fans, as well as the needs of the stories that we have to tell on the show?

While Magnum IP was not in long list of programs that have had to suspend production in March 2020 due to the outbreak of the COVID pandemic, I was still greatly affected by the pandemic regarding the uncertainty about the future. After the long pandemic break, the magnums The team returned for two more seasons on CBS before last year’s cancellation, and the long layoff before the NBC premiere brought some challenges. Hill continued:

They didn’t expect them to be cancelled, so they were already anticipating what the stories would be for next season, and that’s good. So we already knew what was going to happen, but we didn’t have the staff. I think they only have eight writers for the entire season and we’re doing two episodes at a time. So when you do two episodes, you have to write at least two shows, right? [laughs] So they had to write all these programs right away. It was tough, I think, and in trying to accommodate everyone’s needs, they mostly focused on the stories they had already planned. How difficult!

The show had a bit of a head start by knowing what the writers had planned for Season 5 before the cancellation announcement, but coming back with fewer writers to execute on those plans was obviously tricky! Now that several Season 5 episodes have aired (and can be aired again with a Peacock Premium Membership ), I think it’s safe to say that the show is back to delivering the kind of stories that fans were so excited about in the beginning.

new episodes of Magnum IP . airs Sundays at 9:00 p.m. ET on NBC, ahead of the current tenth and final season of The blacklist. It’s hard to guess how far into the future the show starring Jay Hernandez, Perdita Weeks, Tim Kang, Stephen Hill, Zachary Knighton and, of course, Amy Hill is on NBC, but the two-season renewal means fans can kick back and enjoy. riding for the foreseeable future!
