I had the honor of speaking with Michael Dorn Star Trek: Picard and asked him whether or not he agreed with the season 3 finale that gave fans a real send-off for the team. And faced with the question, he didn’t give much of an idea. Dorn recalled past installments of the next generation and weighed in on how he personally feels people overrate the importance of character endings or goodbyes:
I think people are obsessed with endings and goodbyes. And, in a way, it ties into my spiritual journey, Worf’s spiritual journey, which has no purpose. It’s about the journey. As we have seen, how many times have we killed The Next Generation? I don’t think the fans necessarily want that.
Michael Dorn seemed to wag a proverbial finger at anyone hoping for some kind of final end for Worf, Jean-Luc Picard and company. That said, you’re right that the franchise has tried to close the book on these characters many times, and they keep coming back in one form or another. Maybe we shouldn’t say goodbye to this lovable cat just yet, or at least someone like Dorn, who apparently still wants to continue playing his roles in this fictional universe.
Naturally, the 70-year-old actor has kept quiet about what exactly viewers can expect from the Star Trek: Picard end of series. While doubling down on his opinion of byes and endings, he also shared a fun note about the fluid nature of the long-running franchise:
I always joke, ‘Hey, we’re in space. Anything could happen.’ … Who knows what will happen, I just don’t know. but I think he [statements about] Terminations and deletions are overused.
The veteran actor’s comments are in line with the message shared by many in the Star Trek: Picard to discard. Ed Speleers has previously spoken about his willingness to appear in spinoffs if given the opportunity. And he wouldn’t mind if his Jack Crusher shared the stage with Wil Wheaton’s Wesley Crusher.

speculation about star Trek and future spin-offs is a little difficult right now, given that the news of Discovery the end of season 5 has people worried about what’s to come. The seemingly sudden cancellation of the main show could be indicative of cost issues with Paramount+ subscription shows, or it could be that five seasons are the norm for these new series. We can only wait for further responses and hope there is a future for the TNG extension crew on TV if they want to appear. And if not, we’ll have to savor our last time with Michael Dorn’s Worf and more before they re-sign.
