Celia Rose Gooding turned heads in Season 1 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds with her portrayal of legacy character Nyota Uhura, who was first played by the late Nichelle Nichols. The character’s backstory in the freshman series implied that she might have left the fold, though ultimately there were no big surprises. After all, the chances of Uhura actually leaving Starfleet were slim, considering she’s still around and she’s been part of Captain Kirk’s crew since the events of the original series. With that story now in the rearview mirror, Gooding spoke with Gossipify about what fans can expect from her character arc in Season 2, as well as Hemmer’s influence on the Starfleet cadet’s journey.
I had the pleasure of speaking with Celia Rose Gooding at the celebration of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds The next home press release for season 1. I asked the rising star how audiences see Uhura’s story evolving now that she’s determined to stay in Starfleet, and got a wonderfully insightful answer about how they progress through the character arc while revering the past:
It’s like that moment when you finally put your bags down and can unpack. I think Uhura has a lot of baggage. Once she’s decided that this is where she’s going to leave her bags, we see her unpacking in Season 1. The experiences she’s had and the kind of trauma she doesn’t have yet. This is what we see a lot going forward.
Star Trek: Strange New World took a big risk when it came to Hemmer’s death, and some viewers are probably still in shock. It was honestly a tough match for fan favorite Aenar. Hemmer passed away after being implanted with Gorn Eggs, and it’s fair to say that Uhura was the most affected by her death, as she guided her and gave her helpful advice in the early episodes.
Hemmer may be gone, but his impact will be felt strange new worldsThanks to your apprentice. Celia Rose Gooding explained that Hemmer’s wisdom will stay with her character in Season 2, and they also provided insight into how it affects her relationships with her teammates:
We often see her making active decisions to free herself from self-inflicted feelings of “I have to keep it all to myself.” I still don’t know if I can trust these people. She really takes Hemmer’s advice and starts settling around the ship. To do this, you need to dust off some cobwebs and arrange a lot of your big feelings. We see a lot of that in season two.
We may not see Uhura fully realized Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2, but it looks like it will see significant growth in future episodes. She still has a few promotions to earn before she’s ready to become the expert translator and communications manager Kirk sees. Agency. I’m ready for the writers to really peel off some layers of the iconic character.
They strange new worlds The cast impressed many skeptics in Season 1 and, as stars like Melissa Navia joked, the long-awaited second season of the Emigrate the show will be even better. It’s hard to imagine the show getting better reviews than the first season, but hopefully it can and avoid a second slump. The sentiments that have been shared so far are truly exciting and I’m excited to see what’s in store for Celia Rose Gooding’s Uhura and the rest of our heroes.
