It’s a good time to be a Scream fan. After an eleven year hiatus, fans received two shares in one of best horror movie franchise for so many years. The 2022 film and the new release cry VI were made by the filmmaking collective known as Radio Silence, made up of trio members Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett and Chad Villella. The filmmakers behind critically acclaimed slasher (who aren’t afraid to ignore parts of the myth) are now revealing the unique way they tell actors they’re going to be the ones to wield the knife, and it’s so amazing.
The co-directors recently appeared on their own. ReelBlend podcasts to discuss the latest installment in the franchise, take Ghostface to New York, do a Scream films without Neve Campbell and much more. During the conversation, co-host Jake Hamilton asked the filmmakers what was going on while filming the killer reveal, and the group explained how much fun these days of production are having. Here’s what Chad Villella had to say:
I think one of the most important and fun days is the day the killer is revealed when we make the costumes and say to the actors, “Oh, we have one more thing to try.
It makes sense for the filmmakers to keep the killer reveal as close to the chest as possible. It must be an exciting day on set for the actor to discover that he was the killer all along! Matt Bettinelli-Olpin joked:
Yes, we do a real Colombo.
Chad Villella also hinted at how the actors themselves feel when they learn they’ll be donning the classic mask and tunic in the big third act reveal. He continued:
We take off our robe and mask and they’re like, “No way!”
The artists behind Ghostface aren’t the only ones unaware of the killer’s true identity and motive. cry VI cast member Jenna Ortega, who recently appeared in The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in promoting the 2022 sequel, he said the filmmakers gave the actors different storylines with different endings. But for the sixth part, none of the actors received the third act of the script.
This might all sound a little unorthodox, but there’s a crazy way. Tyler Gillett says the jokes are necessary to maintain the film’s killer reveal and for casting purposes. He explained:
You can’t audition, tell them who the killer is, right? Because, then, you just have to tell the city, like, that’s what happens in the next Scream movie. So we also asked different actors to read Amber’s monologue [Scream] five, just so we can find out how many gears they had, what their range was, in terms of performance, and also mislead people as to who is or isn’t the killer.
While they are scary movies, they are also thrillers at their core. It’s nice to see the team behind the films taking the mysteries and revelations seriously, even if they have to prank the cast a couple of times. Watch the full director chat with ReelBlend below:
This latest installment in the saga is a brutal turning point for the franchise, moving the story from Woodsboro to the Big Apple away from the original characters to focus on the new “core four” set in the 2022 release. It sees the return of Courtney Cox in a supporting role, for which Neve Campbell declined to return scream 6 for a salary dispute. Longtime fans will surely miss the character of Sidney Prescott, but it’s hard to deny the love and care the Radio Silence team have put into their directorial duties on the sequels. That includes the really gorgeous way they baptized the actors in the Ghostface costume.
