More than 30 years after playing in one of all the great basketball movies of all time , whites can’t jumpWoody Harrelson once again played a trainer in the sport sample. They 2023 new movie release sees the actor play a man who is kicked off a minor league team and, after a run-in with the law, is assigned to a team of developmentally disabled players as a service to the community. It’s a losing story both on screen and behind the scenes, and the lead actor shared that he learned a few new things from his co-stars while filming the film.
The last one Movie by Woody Harrelson employed a series of first-time disabled actors similar to the characters played in the crew of ‘The Friends’. When it comes to working with her co-stars in sampleHarrelson opened up about his improv experience with key cast, telling Gossipify:
Bobby didn’t want me to meet them until we actually met for the first time, which I thought was a great idea. So we first met in the movie the same way Marcus met them. And he was really crazy, you know, because usually he almost inevitably meets the actors first. And, whatever my concern is, well, we’re going to do the script or we’re going to throw the script away, or how it immediately becomes, uh, silly. It was fun. They were very professional and taught me a lot about what it means to be a real actor and be authentic in the moment. And it was really a good experience.
Harrelson spoke fondly of his experience as the unlikely coach of ten teammates who all have disabilities, and worked closely with those actors on sample. As the actor shared, when audiences see his character meeting “The Friends” in the film, it was actually the first time he’s met them in real life. He found his experience working with young actors very authentic during filming, and felt that he was actually learning something new from them and not the other way around.
sample is based on a 2018 Spanish film of the same name, sampleinspired by a real Spanish basketball team created by people with intellectual disabilities who won 12 Spanish championships between 1999 and 2014. Gossipify also spoke to the film’s director, Bobby Farrelly, who shared his experience working with the cast Of sample:
Every day ‘The Friends’ made us laugh with moments of improvisation. We had a great script to start with, so we wanted to definitely get what was in the script. But the kids made things up every day and Woody, being the improv actor that he is, did. But you know, a lot of improv also comes from the way we shoot a lot of basketball scenes and it’s hard to orchestrate exactly what’s going to happen as you shoot a basketball scene. So what I would do is let them all play for a minute while we film them. And in those moments so many things happened that you didn’t expect. That was real improv, it was really a real basketball game.
the cast of sample There was a lot of balance between having to play basketball on screen and simulating fun and endearing moments between the team and Harrelson’s coaching character. The film marks a rare major release featuring actors with disabilities in a sector where the community has often been represented by able-bodied, stereotyped people and, to date, little represented on the big screen.
