To put it frankly, call me by your name It has one of the most heartbreaking and beautiful endings I’ve ever seen. What is the greatest meaning of Elio’s father’s monologue?
Probably one of the best scenes in the entire film is the conversation between Elio and his father, Mr. Perlman. While never obvious, this discourse makes it clear how much empathy Stuhlbarg’s character has for his son.
She claims to envy Elio’s relationship, but also stresses how much she loves that her son found love in the carefully crafted monologue. In general, this moment between father and son is full of hope, although she does not outwardly acknowledge what happened, she underlines that Elio must not be ashamed or bury his feelings, he must prove them. The last lines of Elio’s father’s monologue they are:
Maybe I got close. But I’ve never had what you two have had. There was always something stopping me or bothering me. How you live your life is up to you; just remember that our hearts and bodies are only given to us once, and before you know it, your heart is exhausted. I vacillated back and forth with the meaning of this monologue. Is Elio’s father a closeted homosexual who wanted to have what Elio and Oliver had? Does he just admit to knowing what was going on with Elio? It’s not clear, but one thing is certain, Chalamet’s character has all the support of his father.
This revelation shows Elio and the public that he is not alone in this sad moment. It also means that this talk and advice is coming from a man who knows exactly what he’s going through, and it’s reassuring to know that things will get better, as long as you find joy in it all. In my interpretation of the film, I see this moment as why Elio feels entitled to feel his feelings in the final moments of the film after the phone call he receives from Oliver.
Why was that phone call so devastating?
After Mr. Perlman’s monologue, the film progresses from late summer to part of winter. Eilo is seen entering his house, seemingly happy and listening to music. The phone rings and he answers. It’s Oliver. Sure, it’s Olivier.
You can feel the simultaneous excitement and amazement in Chalamet’s performance as he talks to his first love. They chat for a bit, before Elio’s parents get on the phone to greet him enthusiastically. We discover that Oliver is engaged to a woman and, in response, Elio calls Oliver by name, recalling the title of the film and sending the two back to their first romantic moments together.
Oliver then ends the call by saying “I remember everything”. Proving that this summer meant nothing to him, making this moment all the more heartbreaking. After the phone call, Elio enters the room and cries.
Why Elio cries during the credits is so shocking
To make the end of this film even more raw, the last minutes of call me by your name it’s just Elio crying. After she hangs up the phone, he walks over to the fireplace, curls up and starts crying. It is the culmination of those last two moments: the monologue and the phone call. Chalamet’s character allows himself to experience all these feelings and enjoy the joy and sadness of this life-changing summer.
