DC fans have a lot of questions about how, when and where Shazam movies fall the largest DC universe …especially since the new regime of James Gunn and Peter Safran plans to reboot the world and start making movies they’re passionate about. But in the first Shazam, there were many references to ongoing heroes of the DC Universe. Freddy Freeman (Jack Dylan Grazer) has an authentic Batarang that belongs to Ben Affleck’s Batman. Wonder Woman, Aquaman and The Flash have names included trailers for Shazam: Fury of the Gods . And of course Superman appears (but not necessarily Henry Cavill). that infamous final blow from the original movie. Boy, has this already started a conversation in the DC fandom.
All this to say this Shazam Director David Sandberg has never been shy about telling his audience that DC’s fellow heroes are present in his take on the world. and as he said the ReelBlend Podcast In an interview before the launch of Shazam: Fury of the Gods, posted an almost joking scene that supposedly included Shazam and Batman trying to break through the barrier erected by the Daughters of the Atlas over the city of Philadelphia. See the barrier in the trailer . It ends up looking like this:
And then it looked like this:
After Shazam: Fury of the Gods Director David Sandberg told the hosts of ReelBlend he was considering a scene where superman and batman could come to help the city. As she explained:
I (thought) we might have a scene just outside the dome, where you see something like, ‘Oh, Superman, maybe he’s trying to get inside.’ Even if you see it on the news or something from afar. But if it weren’t totally serious, it also opens up a whole Pandora’s box. Like, where am I? Where they went? (Laughter) They say, ‘Yeah, we can’t do that. Let’s go back to the bat cave or something.
When pressed to see if he would go so far as to consider using Henry Cavill or Ben Affleck in his sequel, Sandberg was quick to clarify that the idea never got beyond its early stage, saying:
No, it wasn’t entirely serious. And I think if anything, it probably would have been like a news report, and you only see a small number.
Which would still have been a nice way to show that yes, other DC heroes can and do show up when there is a threat in a key US city like Philadelphia where the Shazam family lives. We know they are there. is part of a handful of things we know From Shazam: Fury of the Gods before the movie opens this weekend. The sequel is almost here. Buy your tickets now.
