The horror genre has been experiencing a resurgence for years now, and 2023 has definitely started off with a bang thanks to releases like M3GAN AND cry VI. The latest film arrived this weekend and has already broken records for the beloved franchise. Like its 2022 predecessor, the new Scream it was helmed by director duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who are also super fans of the property. The last two films brought back historical figures like Judy Hicks and Kirby Reed respectively, and there are 5 of them. Scream survivors who I think need to be brought back in a future sequel.
In each Scream movies, there are characters who make it out of their encounter with Ghostface still alive. When I spoke to directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett before cry VIFollowing the release of , they teased that the identity of another potential returning character was revealed via an easter egg. I’ve seen the movie twice and can’t crack the code, but there seem to be obvious options to go back to if Paramount greenlights another sequel. Let’s analyze everything.
Patrick Dempsey as Mark Kincaid (Scream 3)
It’s a Scream return that seemed inevitable for a while. Grey’s Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey played Mark Kincaid in scream 3, and survived the attacks of Ghostface Roman Bridger. While he hasn’t been seen in the slasher franchise since, he’s felt out of place thanks to a few key references.
Because when Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott appeared in 2022 Scream, it became clear that she and Mark ended up getting married and starting a family together. Her name was withheld, although Patrick Dempsey never appeared. But with the franchise continuing to rely on legacy characters, could that change going forward? Of course, Kincaid’s return would presumably be tied to Sidney, so Neve Campbell may have to negotiate a new deal to see this couple return to the big screen. But with Patrick Dempsey only recently entering the sequel with his role disillusionedIt does not seem entirely excluded that he could take another one Scream I am working.
Rebecca Gayheart and Portia de Rossi as Sister Lois and Sister Murphy (Scream 2)
This is a two-fer. 1997 scream 2 ensued as Sidney left for college, only for Ghostface to return for another slaughter. Wes Craven’s first sequel was littered with red herrings, with some of those characters never making contact with the masked killer during its 120-minute run. And that was definitely the case with Sister Lois and Sister Murphy, played by Rebecca Gayheart and Portia de Rossi, respectively.
These two characters have largely been kept out of the main action of scream 2; they were at various parties and cast in Sidney’s comedy, but they weren’t as bloody as most of their co-stars. So hardcore fans would no doubt be thrilled to see them return in the future. Scream movie.
If we judge by the Easter eggs in cry VI, the return of Lois and/or Murphy seems possible. Namely, why Jenna Ortega’s Tara says she was considering committing herself to Omega Beta Zega in college, which is one of the fraternities in scream 2. Could Tara end up going to Delta Lambda Zeta and meeting Lois or Murphy at a high school event? Only time will tell.
Heather Matarazzo as Martha Meeks (Scream 3, Scream 2022)
This Scream The legacy character is perhaps the most likely to return of all on this list. Namely, because Heather Matarazzo recently reprized her role as Martha Meeks in the 2022 film. And as such, she has worked with the folks at Radio Silence and could easily return to her character.
Martha is the mother of Mindy and Chad Meeks-Martin, and the sister of Randy by Jamie Kennedy. She originally appeared in scream 3on a small sheet of paper. And since the twins make up half of the Core Four, it seems logical that he could return in a future sequel. We could find out who Mindy and Chad’s father is.
Actress Heather Matarazzo has had a long career filled with iconic roles, so I can’t wait to see Martha get her Ghostface scene in the future. Matarazzo can draw on his horror roots Shelter: Part IIand eventually become the center of attention in a Scream stage. I’d also like to see this as a starter kill, perhaps giving Chad and Mindy a reason to return to Woodsboro.
Duane Martin as Joel Jones (Scream 2)
1996 original by West Craven Scream The film introduced the official rules for surviving a horror film, iconically introduced by Jamie Kennedy’s Randy Meeks. In addition to not having sex or using drugs, there is a way to ensure survival that hardly anyone uses: taking the TF out of dodging. While Sam and Tara attempted to escape Woodsboro in the 2022 sequel, only one character managed to leave at the start of a Scream movie. And that honor goes to scream 2Joel played by actor Duane Martin.
Duane Martin is prominent in publishing and marketing for scream 2, but ended up playing a rather minor role. Originally hired as a last-minute cameraman for Gale Weathers, his character Joel finally learns of the Woodsboro murders when Ghostface begins killing victims at Windsor College. And once he finds out what happened to the last cameraman, he cunningly flees and is never seen again.
Joel’s possible return could have been mentioned cry VI from the infamous use of a camera as a weapon. When Ghostface attacks the New York shrine dedicated to former killers, Mason Gooding’s Chad ends up using a camera to attack the killer. The camera itself is probably Kenny’s from the original. Scream, but it could also be Joel’s. Either way, it seems like a potential wire to pull to find out what the filmmakers are planning.
Bonus Round: Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott
Naturally, fans of the legacy characters are the most eager for a return. Scream is its protagonist Sidney Prescott, played to perfection by Neve Campbell in the first five films. sadly she is gone cry VI due to a salary dispute, making this film the first without Sidney.
While the Core Four are excellent actors who have deftly portrayed the heartwarming story of cry VII would still like to see Neve Campbell negotiate a new contract and come back for future sequels. Scream Actors new and old have thrown their support behind Campbell, so there doesn’t seem to be any hard feelings. Let’s hope he actually comes back for a future match against Ghostface.
cry VI it’s in theaters now. Be sure to check out the 2023 movie release dates to plan your next movie experience.
