Spoilers ahead for the series premiere gotham knights on the toilet.
gotham knights finally created to offer a new take on an iconic comic book location, as well as at least one character name that any Batman fan will likely be familiar with. Supernatural ex Misha Collins plays none other than Harvey Dent for the new show Although Harvey is still a permanent district attorney at gotham knights at this point, the character is notable for his final transformation into the villainous Two-Face. Showrunners Chad Fiveash and James Stoteraux explained why Collins was right for the job and there are links to Supernatural.
Misha Collins was one of The CW’s most recognizable actresses for over a decade when she played the angel Castiel Supernatural. It is actually the third of the main ones. Supernatural stars to return to the network (with Jared Padalecki starring in Walker and Jensen Ackles who produces/appears in the winchesters), and the gotham knights the showrunners were already fans before he officially signed on to play the future Two-Face.
Chad Fiveash and James Stoteraux spoke to Gossipify at SCAD TV Festival , and speaking of Harvey Dent, Stoteraux explained that the “trick” is to try to create a “surprising, interesting and compelling” story when “everyone knows this character is going to go through this transformation.” They had to find a way to turn the Harvey Dent story into Two-Face. gotham knightsand Fiveash explained the solution:
The first step is to choose Misha Collins.
Misha Collins has proven he can deliver genre series after more than a decade Supernaturaland James Stoteraux explained it gotham knights he needed to cast “someone who has such an innate goodness, and Misha Collins is like the best boy ever.” Harvey Dent may be doomed to be a villain, but to begin with, the show needed, as Chad Fiveash noted, Collins to be someone who “doesn’t have two faces.” Stoteraux continues:
That was important to us because we wanted people to really see that side of the character before the villain’s story.
fan of Supernatural definitely saw Misha Collins play a good character, but Castiel didn’t go from season 4 to season 15 without some transformations, for better or for worse. They gotham knights the showrunners confirmed they are both big fans of Supernatural at the time, and this fact came to light during the casting process. James Stoteraux explained:
It’s funny, when we first met him, it was a really fun and interesting meeting. He was like, ‘Oh, I’ll show you this episode!’ We’re like, ‘No, we’ve seen it. So we didn’t need to convince Misha Collins.
They didn’t reveal which episodes in particular Misha Collins would show them, but since she’s appeared in over 100 of SupernaturalOf the 300+ episodes of it’s, there was so much to choose from! Chad Fiveash went on to say that “the great thing about him is that he tried to sell us out,” which the showrunners certainly didn’t need. Stoteraux specifies:
The meeting was for us to sell it. He was also charming. Like, there were elements of his past that we didn’t know about, like [that] he was a White House intern and initially started out with political aspirations. It makes sense when you hear it because [of] his activism and push for social justice… He was perfect for Harvey Dent’s political side. He was like, ‘Oh, he totally gets that. It was one of those meetings where you walked away from that meeting and said, “I hope he says yes!”
And Misha Collins definitely said yes! The series premiere was enough to prove that wearing a suit and tie is not the case gotham knights‘ version of Harvey Dent in Castiel 2.0. Supernatural fans see another side of the actor, and it seems gotham knights viewers who have never seen him as Cas will see him play the role of Gotham City’s most iconic district attorney. The showrunners made it clear they had no regrets about Collins after casting him, as they only had positive things to say. James Stoteraux praised:
And you know what? We love it very much. He was also a leader and a creative partner, not just as an actor. It’s funny, he comes to us with ideas that you hear and says, “Okay, we’re going to have to give him credit because it’s a great idea.”
Stoteraux’s comments echo those of Collins. gotham knights co-stars said to work with him , with Rahart Adams (who plays Brody March) praising him as a “legend” who “always watches over us”, and Fallon Smythe (Harper Rowe) saying he “really treats us all as partners and colleagues and family.” Chad Fiveash continued with some insight into Collins’ involvement in Harvey’s journey behind the scenes, as well as on camera:
He was a very big part of creating Harvey as a character and, honestly, that character’s journey. I don’t know what we would do without him. [laughs]
Hopefully the program won’t have to worry about doing anything without it, but a lot may depend on how long it takes. gotham knights to begin Harvey’s transformation into Two-Face. Based on what the showrunners have said about how gotham knights he has superpowers , there may already be plans for how the show can continue to tell stories beyond the first season. Furthermore, James Stoteraux stated:
He has a brilliant sense of character and what he wants to do. It was a real collaboration. He’ll call and say ‘I have this idea!’ And we say, ‘It’s coming! We will do it.’
