If you’re a young chef who might need a little encouragement to step out of your comfort zone, Kristen Kish has some advice for you: Now’s the time to play.
Kish, who’s already had his fair share of TV cooking with his win on season 10 of Top Chef (opens in a new tab)In addition to hosting appearances on various cooking shows, she has now become the host of National Geographic’s latest entry into the culinary genre, Restaurants at the end of the world. In the new series, Kish travels to some of the most remote restaurants on the planet, meeting interesting and sincere people cooking along the way.
But of course, in a series like this, Kish has the opportunity to try new things and invent new flavors, such as reindeer tongue, which I could be a little too adventurous for novice cooks. Kish had some great advice for home chefs, though: that this is the time where you have the freedom to do whatever you want, where for her she has to run restaurants and not have the ability to go out and play. a lot in the kitchen. As she explains:
More scrutiny needs to be put in place which means you run a business and run it successfully so you need to be careful of food costs, you need to be careful of poor reviews if you cook something wrong in all of these ways. things, and the element of play and experimentation is less and less, or at least it has been for my career.
In fact, Kish even says he has to put in the effort to try and do more, which is why it’s a great opportunity for home chefs to get out there and have fun and don’t be afraid to make a mistake which is one of the goals of Restaurants at the end of the world.
You can play and experiment and make mistakes without anyone judging you, maybe except your own, judging you, but that’s the beauty of it. I need to do better outside the restaurant and play more in the kitchen, but if you have no one waiting to write you a bad review, you’re in this space, the main space, to experience the food. and that’s exciting for me, because I wish I could do it more often.
Kish also suggested that while you can’t necessarily get reindeer tongue at your local grocery store, you can go for beef tongue and that, in and of itself, is a big step in the right direction for stepping out of your comfort zone.
When it comes to cooking shows, I’m one of the biggest fans. Considering I’d seen them as a kid with my mom, like The best cook or the famous Hell’s Kitchen, I only started being interested in it when I grew up. From some Gordon Ramsay shows, like the new Next Level Chef, to the best cooking shows on Netflix. All of these programs have pushed me to become a better cook.
Yet nothing has come so close to the experience of seeing Restaurants at the end of the world and feel really inspired to go out and try new things or at least try beef tongue.
Restaurants at the end of the world weekly previews on National Geographic at 10pm as part of the 2023 TV premiere schedule before streaming on Disney+ the following day.
