Warning: spoilers for Luther: the fallen sun they’re in the game If you haven’t seen this Netflix mystery thriller yet, you’ve been warned.
Detective mysteries have evolved from the days when a simple moral crusader was the only person capable of solving crimes. As these characters have become increasingly complex, so have the cases that detectives like Idris Elba’s John Luther have been called upon to close. Now with Netflix 2023 new movie release Luther: the fallen sun, this point of view was applied to a new character in the franchise: Cynthia Erivo’s DCI Odette Raine. Looking back, it’s something Erivo sees as a step forward for women’s representation, and for very good reason.
When I had the privilege of speaking with the actress as part of the Netflix (opens in a new tab) print day for luther first feature film, we dive into the details of DCI Raine’s character. Cynthia Erivo, a relatively newcomer to creator Neil Cross’ crime thriller saga block, appreciated the role she got for what she let her play. Here’s what Erivo told Gossipify about what this opportunity meant to her:
I love the way it’s written, it feels like they took great care of it. Neil Cross is so wonderful, and I felt like he really cared about this woman, and made her as complex and complex a person as possible. I loved it…you see her almost falling apart towards the end. You start with someone who is very righteous and who knows what he is doing. It’s at the very end of the line and it’s all good or bad, bad or right, there’s no in-between, and you see her realizing that there has to be some in between. There’s a gray area, and then… it collapses. I love being able to touch him, and it’s not often you get women like that in these spaces. So that’s really cool.
At the beginning of the Jamie Payne-directed film, John Luther is in prison due to David Robey (Andy Serkis), a twisted cybernetic serial killer who has driven the main protagonist away to avoid further trouble. It falls to DCI Odette Raine to try and capture both Luther and Robey, which leads Cynthia Erivo’s character into an even deadlier game than she could ever imagine.
However, as the film progresses, and in truth luther Raine begins to discover that she has more in common with the supposedly disgraced detective she’s been looking for than she cares to admit. Which leads to the main portrayal angle that Erivo likes to play Odette Raine. Her new character is not only another strong female force forever in this fictional universe, but she looks so much like John Luther that we can examine her character more effectively.
This leads to some pretty intense moments, especially when DCI Raine is compromised in a way that gets her in serious trouble against luther the best police. At a time when Any Serkis’ David Robey has influence over Odette Raine, the stern detective is forced to capture John Luther at gunpoint to save someone he loves.
Anyone familiar with this BBC series will surely know that the themes of love and loyalty loom large when it comes to John Luther. Further intensifying the parallels between the characters of Idris Elba and Cynthia Erivo, the fallen sun he sees a clash of wills that ultimately leads to a truce in the name of the law. As much as Erivo promoted changes to Bad film adaptation and how they will amplify the friendship of Elphaba and Glinda, the character of Odette further enriched the luther landscape through this singular thread.
Talk more about how he loved to play Luther: The fallen sun latest addition, widows the alum was even more thrilled to take on this role. Providing more context as to why he feels this way, the acclaimed actor made these further connections between Odette Raine and John Luther:
I think that’s what’s exciting. She’s still trying to fall into Luther country. That’s where we left it, it’s on the cutting edge. And that’s what I like about her, it makes her a little dangerous. When she takes out her gun and leads him down the hall, you think she will. You think at any moment that gun is going to explode and shoot in the wrong direction. And she knows how to use it, she’s trained to do it. The fact that she has it inside her is enough to know that, “Oh, this woman has more layers than we think.” It’s been fun to explore what that could become.
Rather than providing the franchise with another female character who simply serves as a symbol of law and order, the film ups the ante with DCI Odette Raine’s similar nature to her quarry. With fan panic Luther: The fallen sun END , the results of this ending seem to have left room on the streets for another detective to administer special justice.
Cynthia Erivo, along with Neil Cross and Jamie Payne, have expressed interest in a possible spin-off that would follow Odette’s exploits in more detail. If that were to happen, more ground could be opened up, as we see luther The legacy inspires a new character to keep in mind learning when to step out of line and when to play by the rules of the game.
You can see the genesis of this model in Luther: the fallen suncurrently streaming for all fans with a Netflix subscription . Meanwhile, what we know Bad tells us we’ll see Cynthia Erivo defy gravity on the big screen when the first installment drops on Nov. 27, 2024.
