In the middle of the first two seasons of shadow and bone is the complex relationship between Alina Starkov and General Kirigan (also known as The Darkling in the books). They begin with a generally positive relationship as the shadow summoner teaches the sun summoner how to harness his power. However, things go awry when Alina learns that her mentor and her short-lived love have created the Shadow Fold. Now in Season 2 of shadow and bone , Alina has become more confident in her power and is determined to destroy The Folds. Kirigan haunts her though, but he’s also haunted by her, and Ben Barnes explained why that is.
One of the most important things from remember the first season shadow and bone This is how Alina felt betrayed when she discovered Kirigan’s true colors. Upon learning that she was the mastermind of the biggest problem Ravka had ever faced, she was furious and she resolved to defeat him. However, as Ben Barnes explained to CinmeaBlend, Kirigan is equally obsessed with this relationship, as he sees something in her that he sees in himself. The actor explained, saying:
It’s a bit of a cliché to say that he recognizes something of himself in her, but he’s found that unique power and he’s found someone who has it and has represented it from the beginning. But I also think he’s a man who’s very passionate about his agenda, but also deeply curious. And if you ask Alina a question, like “what are you willing to sacrifice to achieve your goals?” You ask yourself the question too. Is he ready to give up what is most important to him? Is this, in the end, the most important thing for him, Alina? Is there some kind of deeply lost hope and love inside him seeping through those cracks that will ultimately be more important than what he’s trying to achieve? And that toxic, horrible, poisonous Machiavellian kind of way that he does it.
Barnes explained to Expiration that his character actually has feelings for Alina, and when he loses her, his army, and his palace, everything “turns into this storm.” Not only is he tormented, but he’s also angry that he lost everything he had, and as the actor behind him said, The Darkling has “disappeared,” making him a complete villain in season two.
Throughout the season, General Kirigan’s troubles and anger are personified through the shadow demons that emerge from him. They prove dangerous to anyone who stands in their path, but they are also dangerous to The Darkling. Barnes told us how these shadows affect The Darkling and how they help the audience understand everything this villain is going through, he said:
We see shadow demons literally poisoning him from within. And he struggles with a lot of things, and I think the only thing that lets him breathe is the feeling that there might be someone in the world who would understand that, and I think that’s why I was trying to represent him. Physically, when they established their relationship in season 2, it was important for me to try and bring something of that kind of conscious breathing moment that I loved, to stitch it into something that I understand in the context of the pursuit of world peace. .
So it turns out that the amount of humanity The Darkling seems to have is based on his care for Alina. He lived a long time and could never trust anyone or make anyone understand what it was like to have the power that he had. However, it’s clear that Alina no longer has feelings for him and will use her newfound power to destroy him, which has been bothering Kirigan throughout the season.
It’s fascinating to hear that Barnes used conscious breathing to help ground his character and physically show the audience that The Darkling is also struggling this season. These physical performance to help show the character struggle of him are similar to how Jessie Mei Li has evolved her acting skills to show off Alina’s newfound power. Throughout season 2, it was clear that the two characters were constantly at odds, and even though they were never physically in the same room, one could feel the tension and mutual torment between the two characters.
