Spoilers for the second season of shadow and bone Before.
Most book-to-screen adaptations presents many changes of all sizes when a novel turns into a film or a series. shadow and bone features many moments straight from the books and stays very true to their characters. However, he’s no stranger to big changes either, as the show combines storylines and characters from the original Grishaverse trilogy and six of crows in a series. There are also more nuanced changes that allowed the actors to delve deeper into their characters’ relationships, and this was very true of Daisy Head and Ben Barnes when they portrayed the complex relationship between Genya and General Kirigan in Season 2 of shadow and bone .
With the two characters. develop his ties with Alina in the second season, the relationship between Genya and The Darkling is the focus of the Netflix series (opens in a new tab). books siege and storm AND fall and get up are told from Alina’s first-person perspective, there’s a lot we readers can’t see. However, there is no dominant perspective in the series and for this reason Ben Barnes and Daisy Head were able to explore and develop the relationship between their characters. Head told Gossipify that while the characters’ dark relationship is portrayed in the books, they were able to flesh out the tension between Genya and General Kirigan into something bigger for the show. Barnes agreed with her, saying:
There’s a tension between them, but we actually managed to develop something that was actually almost a purer example of that kind of toxic relationship that you just talked about and why it stays.
In the books, as in the series, the Grishas are unaware that General Kirigan is evil until it is revealed that he created The Fold. When this happens, it is also revealed that Genya was on The Darkling’s side and decided to stay with him after Alina found out the truth, making her feel betrayed. In siege and storm, The tailor continues to work for the general, but in ruin and resurrect, we learn that she was punished by him after he forgave Alina, leaving scars on her face.
Meanwhile in the show, it’s very clear that Genya is quite conflicted with General Kirigan and doesn’t really want to trust him, but that’s all she knows. Head explained why his character decided to stick with Barnes’ villain and how they were able to slightly change their motivations on the show, saying:
Yeah, there’s a familiarity and there’s also something like it’s not really Stockholm syndrome, but there’s this slightly adversarial juxtaposition of their relationship and that’s, you know, he’s the closest to hers family until he meets Alina. . And I think, yes, I said before that he finds security in the familiarity of that, although the familiarity of that is obviously very precarious because of the nature of the relationship. But it’s been really fun with Ben to find those moments where we can connect.
Barnes agreed with this point and explained how they were able to show that the characters’ relationship and motivations are not black or white, but rather gray, which really helps show the toxicity of their relationship and why Genya remains. He said:
And to have some freedom to explore these themes, which I think are the nuances, the nuances of these themes, which I think are somewhat contemporary as part of something much bigger, bigger, because fantasy has often this kind of very broad, dark versus light, these kind of big themes. But to really remove the stuff that feels very hip, you know, in terms of relationship toxicity, you know, you’re struggling.
It’s fascinating to hear how these actors have developed their characters and the relationships they have. Genya and General Kirigan have one of the darkest stories in season 2 of shadow and boneand hearing how the actors were able to really develop that relationship and make it more nuanced and complex makes it even more meaningful.
