We know Kiefer Sutherland as a heroic man with a plan. Many have recognized him from the days of him starring in shows like 24 AND designated survivorhowever, in the new complex series rabbit hole , he’s not the obvious protagonist we’re used to seeing, he’s a little more complicated than that. So when Glenn Ficarra and John Requa were developing their spy thriller, they needed a guy people would trust so they could fool the audience, which is why Kiefer Sutherland was the perfect choice for John Weir.
Glenn Ficarra said they actually wrote the role specifically for Sutherland, with the writer telling Gossipify why they had him in mind and what prompted them to take on the role. 24 alum in his new show:
In fact, we wrote it for Kiefer. We had heard that he was looking for something and John [Requa] I just had this kind of unexpected shot on a guy who manipulates reality for a living by getting caught up in something that pops into his head or so we may seem so maybe his reality is being manipulated and he doesn’t let it know
This idea of a layered thriller excited Sutherland, and he told her so collider that when Ficarra and Requa approached him for the role, he recalled the 1970s thriller he loved, explaining that when he started his career he “really wanted to start making those movies.” The actor was drawn to the show’s complex levels of deception and loved the idea of playing a con man. Ficarra also liked the idea, especially given Sutherland’s career as a hero, noting that the juxtaposition of his filmography with this character he’s been asked to play would be fun to watch, explaining:
Because Kiefer is kind of an American hero, you know, in our kind of folklore. You know, we always knew the audience would be with him, even though he’s fooled them at times with what he knows, what he doesn’t know, and what he reveals throughout the series. So it was crucial that it was someone like Kiefer, and we were lucky to have him and we talked about him a lot as we were writing and we talked about him all the time, obviously while we were shooting.
Sutherland’s career is filled with many heroic characters, but the first two that come to mind are Jack Bauer 24, I may have an awakening rumors are still circulating and designated survivor, where he played Tom Kirkman, housing secretary turned president of the United States. Both shows were adored by fans and lasted a long time, though designated survivor I had to switch to Netflix. at a certain point. So with rabbit hole I know I have a preconceived idea of who Kiefer Sutherland tends to play whenever he’s on a TV show, and the creators are right, his casting really helped create this web of deception that the show is based on.
While Sutherland’s character in rabbit hole active part of the problem, like Jack Bauer in 24, John Weir inside rabbit hole you are ultimately trying to stop a force that could potentially destroy a nation. Both characters are also highly motivated to do what they need to do to get their job done, and sometimes that means crossing legal and ethical lines that they probably shouldn’t.
I think Ficarra and Requa had the right idea when they decided to talk to Kiefer Sutherland about this Paramount+ series. Audiences love to watch this iconic actor in intense dramas like 24 AND designated survivorand they’ll probably love seeing him in this spy thriller. rabbit hole.
new episodes of rabbit hole they fall every Sunday for those who have a Paramount+ Subscription and be sure to keep an eye on it TV show 2023 to see what other shows like this are coming to the small screen soon.
