John Wick: Chapter 4 Had An Alternate Ending, And The Director Explains Why It Was Turned Down

SPOILER ALERT: The following article contains major spoilers for John Wick: Chapter 4. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, proceed at your own risk.

There is no doubt that John Wick: Chapter 4 has a shocking ending. The franchise is currently at the peak of its popularity (as indicated by its spectacular opening weekend at the box office), and it’s crazy enough that the new film ends with the death of its main character. That said, it’s an ending that the blockbuster wins out of hand, and acknowledging that, it’s understandable why director Chad Stahelski didn’t pick the alternate ending for the film that was shot and ultimately unused.

Stahelski told me about the version of John Wick: Chapter 4 that audiences didn’t see during a virtual interview earlier this month, a conversation that also included a discussion of the film’s post-credits footage edits. While talking about the film’s conclusion in general and the big decisions that were made, he preempted me by telling me that the production was shooting an alternate ending. I kept asking if he could tell me about it, and the director said (referring to a John Woo classic):

It would have been more definitive one way or another. You may have seen evidence that someone was still alive. We tried it and we were like, ‘Yeah… this isn’t hardcore’. You have to be tough for a while.

Chad Stahelski referenced Difficult even in our discussion of the post-credits scene, noting that he and star Keanu Reeves wanted to go along with this movie’s roadmap by saying, “We’ve got to kill everybody.”

In the final scenes of John Wick: Chapter 4, the main protagonist claims victory against the mysterious high table when he kills the evil Marquis (Bill Skarsgård) in a duel, only to be seemingly mortally wounded. John asks Winston (Ian McShane) to take him home to New York, and as the action shifts from France to the United States, Winston and The Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne) are pictured standing by John’s grave, John Wick .

Since we don’t actually see John die/see a body, the film leaves it up to the audience to interpret whether the character is actually dead or alive and puts an end to the “John Wick” identity. It’s a satisfying ending as it feels like a firm conclusion to the vengeance mission the protagonist started in the first film, but that feeling would be ruined if it were confirmed that he’s alive, as far as one can tell by judging. that the right choice was made.

At the very least, we can say that audiences haven’t seen the last of Keanu Reeves as John Wick, as we’ll be seeing him again soon in the cast of Dancer – the spin-off with Ana de Armas and with cameos from Ian McShane and Lance Reddick. The film is finished, but Lionsgate has yet to announce a release date.

John Wick: Chapter 4 It’s now in theaters worldwide, and you can find out about all the movies scheduled for the coming weeks and months via our 2023 Movie Release Schedule.
