Why original character Kai Li Cain appears in Batman: The Doom That Came To Gotham, according to writer-director

Typically with Marvel and DC films, the majority of the cast consists of characters from the source material. But every now and then there is room to include new creations and inside Batman: the scourge that has come to GothamIn the case of, that character is Kai Li Cain, one of Bruce Wayne’s students. If you’re wondering why this quirky character was included in DC’s latest direct-to-video animated film, writer Jase Ricci and director Sam Liu opened up about his origins while speaking with Gossipify.

Based on the “Elseworlds” miniseries of the same name by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, Richard Pace, Troy Nixey and Dennis Janke, Batman: the scourge that has come to Gotham is set in the 1920s and follows the return of David Giuntoli’s Bruce Wayne to Gotham City to investigate and battle the supernatural forces that threaten his home. Unexplored AND You Actress Tati Gabrielle voices Kai Li Cain, who fills the role played by Tim Drake in the original comic, although she has more to do in this adaptation thanks to her supporting role. Curious to know how Kai Li was born, I first asked Jase Ricci how he created it, and he replied:

Obviously the name is a portmanteau of Kelley from Dark Knight Returns and Cassandra Cain, but I think it really comes from… I give full credit to Sam Liu and Jim Krieg, because when we were developing this story, we mentioned points like “Well, here’s a Bruce Wayne who left Gotham City early to travel the world and become Batman. Along the way he amassed, so to speak, these orphans who replace the robins. But it didn’t feel very international. It wasn’t a directive that said, ‘We must expand our distribution.” I thought it was organic to the story. Kai Li actually ended up being one of my favorite characters… The difficult thing about writing Batman is that he’s not very talkative, so it’s hard to know how to get into the her head. Especially when we get to Gotham, she’s our avatar in the story. She’s the newest addition to the Robin pack, and they’re like, ‘Well, that’s the way Bruce is, that’s it. We see her falling in love with Gotham. Here So I think it was a necessary change, and I like that they’re more of a representation of world travel rather than Tim and Jason. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, [but] I think it fits our story better.

For those who don’t know much about Batman, Carrie Kelley was the young woman who became the new Robin in the alternate continuity miniseries. Batman: The Dark Knight Returnsthen reappeared in the sequels. Batman: The Dark Knight Strikes Back AND The Dark Knight III: Master Race. Cassandra Cain has been a part of the mainline DC Comics continuity since 1999, and along with Barbara Gordon’s successor as Batgirl in 2001, she’s also crossed over the identities of Kasumi, Black Bat, and Orphan. So for the film version of Batman: the scourge that has come to Gothamit was decided to reunite these young women with Kai Li Cain to not only help diversify the “Robins” lineup, but also to provide the newcomer’s perspective on both what Bruce Wayne is and his coming to Gotham for the first time .

Kai Li Cain is one of three young people who Batman: the scourge that has come to GothamHe takes Bruce Wayne under his wing, the other two being Dick Grayson (just like the original comic) and Sanjay “Jay” Tawde, a revamped version of Jason Todd. Now that I knew Sam Liu had played a key role in creating Kai Li, I asked the director about his connection to the character. Here’s what he had to say:

Jim Krieg, who’s kind of the head writer, I remember when we first sat down and looked at the script and said, ‘Okay, what are we going to do? How are we going to make it work? »… [Jim Krieg] he was like, ‘This cast is mostly white men. You have two semi-controversial and racist portrayals of Ra’s and Talia, but all are basically a white male. So how can we mess things up a bit… I don’t care if that makes sense, so I’ve been struggling with that a lot. So to me it’s as if Bruce Wayne, after his parents died, was taken overseas by Alfred, and learned pretty much everything he knew. Elements of mysticism, his elements Houdini, his detective, all of that went overseas to different countries with different specialists. It made sense to me that we could probably switch the “Robins”. Because, again, it’s not in America or Gotham City. He’s all over the world and would probably pick up your family on your world travels.

So now we know the story of Kai Li Cain’s creation, and even though it’s an amalgamation of Carrie Kelley and Cassandra Cain, I’ll be curious to see if this specific character will be included in other DC projects later. As for what awaits Kai Li Batman: the scourge that has come to Gothamyou’ll just have to watch the movie for yourself to learn it, although there’s a funny moment where he’s clearly not amused in The Drunken Antics of Oliver Queen, voiced by Christopher Gorham. The film’s voice cast also includes David Giuntoli as Bruce Wayne/Batman (he previously voiced the character in Batman: Soul of the Dragon), John DiMaggio as James Gordon, Patrick Fabian (of Better Call Saul and “The One Piece is real!” fame) as Harvey Dent, Brian George as Alfred Pennyworth, and David Dastmalchian as Grendon, among many others.

Following its world premiere last Friday at WonderCon and in Anaheim, Batman: the scourge that has come to Gotham will be distributed by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. digitally, 4K Combo Pack and Blu-ray on Tuesday, March 28.
