Rabbit Hole’s Kiefer Sutherland explains how 1970s spy thrillers influenced new Paramount+ series

Watching rabbit holeyou can feel the influence of classic spy thrillers and spy movie beaming from her. The web of deception that was invented for this Kiefer Sutherland’s new show It’s directly inspired by 1970s spy thrillers, but updated to fit a modern day setting. And as the star and creator of the show explained, those influences really helped shape the show into what it is today.

When asked which movies inspired his show, Kiefer Sutherland immediately mentioned Three days of the Condor AND marathon runner as two of the main influences for Rabbit hole. The actor told Gossipify that both films had a spiraling effect, dealing with the complexities of truth. He elaborated on this point and spoke specifically about the film directed by Robert Redford, saying:

Robert Redford in Three Days of the Condor was a CIA guy who wasn’t an agent, he was just an employee. But he finds himself in this incredible situation, where every time he tries to tell anyone else what’s happening to him, he just seems crazier and crazier. So when you’re in a situation and you can’t get anyone to believe it, yet the audience is watching you and they know that everything you say is true. You begin to understand how frustrating it can be.

Sutherland then spoke of marathon runner, and how Dustin Hoffman’s character begins to trust the very people who are after him. They 24 alum explained that these layers of trust and deceit can mislead the public, stating the creators of rabbit hole They did a great job taking inspiration from 70’s thrillers and creating a suspenseful and thrilling series.

So when you’re in a situation like Rabbit Hole, where up is down and down is up, and everything is upside down, you start to lose your bearings. And I think it’s an interesting experience to have with an audience because they start to feel viscerally the frustration of the character they’re rooting for. And I think John and Glenn did an expert job of putting it together.

Glenn Ficarra, one of the show’s writers and creators, explained that one of the ways 1970s spy movies influenced rabbit hole it was through how you build your tension. He also pointed out that in any good spy movie there are many layers and surprises. As well as someone who saw rabbit holeI can confirm that the layers that are revealed with each episode are still shocking, and it really feels like you are falling deeper and deeper into that storyline with each episode. Ficarra explained how those old films influenced his own Fundamental+ series (opens in a new tab)tell Gossipify:

Well, I think one of them is that there’s this kind of threat, a sense that something is always going to happen, and it felt like a tonal choice. I think there are a lot of visual references or ties to 70s cinema and a lot of use of sound like in conversations. In the end, it’s just the story that something much bigger is happening behind the scenes. And that seemed to be a big theme in those movies that there was always something big lurking in the shadows that we as an audience didn’t know about and then we just took it and layered it over and over. So it works on a personal and professional level for the protagonist and then overall in the storyline.

It’s very true, him launch rabbit hole also had a difficulty explaining his new series quickly because of all the twists and turns it takes, and we have 1970s spy thrillers in part to thank for that. Watching all the twists and turns unfold, in the style of an old-school thriller, is great fun, and it’s also fascinating to see how the plot devices of those older films are put to use in a world-focused series. .
