Warning: SPOILERS for mason perry Season 2 Episode 4, also known as “Chapter Twelve”, is coming soon!
When We Were With Emily Dodson by Gayle Rankin at the end of mason perry In Season 1, Charlie Dodson’s case was declared void, allowing him to return to everyday life. And while the baby that Lili Taylor’s Birdy McKeegan claimed was a resurrected Charlie was clearly anything but, Emily still decided to accept her baby as her own and joined Birdy’s traveling church. Unfortunately, it was revealed in the Season 2 premiere that Emily later took her own life, with showrunner Michael Begler telling Gossipify how “impostor syndrome” played a part in the decision to kill her.
In “Chapter Nine,” viewers learned that Emily Dodson drowned because she couldn’t get over the loss of Charlie, and Perry was tormented by her because she reached out to him for help, but he didn’t respond. Then, in “Chapter Twelve,” the show flashed back to when Emily decided to sink into a lake because the pain was too much. When I spoke to Michael Begler before last mason perry episode, I asked him why he took what was essentially a neutral ending for Emily in Season 1 and pushed her down an even more tragic path. She shared that it all boiled down to wanting to give the title character a fight for her still relatively new status as a lawyer, saying:
We were really in love with the idea of this imposter syndrome for Perry. Because at the end of season one, it’s really like the Super Friends moment, where it’s like, ‘Here’s Paul, Della and Perry together in the office, let’s go!’ But this dust will settle. It’s not going to be that easy, and very, I think, the idea of him immediately saying, “Well, I’m a lawyer now.” Especially after everything that’s been set up for this guy, this guy lives with these kinds of obsessions, so we thought, “What could really be driving this, this imposter syndrome feeling?” And we were like, ‘Well, what if Emily can’t make it? What if she was still worried about everything that was happening to her? So also for Perry…it’s this idea that putting someone’s life in their hands and whether they can do it again is really important. So knowing that that was the end of Emily and now dealing with these two kids, two men, really, but they look like kids, in the Gallardos… are you ready for it and face it? So we thought it was really punctuated.
While “Chapter Twelve” mostly dealt with twists and turns involving the Gallardo brothers’ case, the death of Emily Dodson was arguably the most disturbing scene of the episode. But like wayfarers Michael Begler and Jack Amiel, muerte fue l’empujón necessary that Perry Mason needed not only to show viewers that the life of the abogado will not be there for him, but also to prepare him to put the lives of others in his hands. Still. Unfortunately, he’s now in a position where he has to defend clients who are definitely guilty, because in the midst of Chris Chalk’s Paul Drake grappling with complications in his personal life, he discovered the weapon Rafael and Mateo Gallardo used to kill Brooks. .
Michael Begler and Jack Amiel entered mason perry Season 2 in April 2021, nine months after HBO decided to renew the Robert Downey-produced show.
