While most major TV revivals take some time to return to the small screen after their initial releases, that’s not quite the case. next sequel in the series Criminal minds: evolution , which will debut on Paramount + less than three years after its premature end on CBS. The transition from linear to streaming crime drama will feature some distinct changes, such as a shorter season that will focus on a single case, as opposed to procedural storytelling. Now showrunner Erica Messer has shed light on an NSFW addition she was thrilled to bring to the world of Criminal minds now that they were away from the chains of transmission.
Speaking to the press for the Paramount + Television Critics Association panel, he focused on Criminal minds: evolution – where it was revealed that revival will premiere its first two episodes on Thursday, November 24 – Messer was asked if the series would be even darker on a streaming platform, with Midnight snack Zach Gilford’s serial killer will be at the center of the entire season. This is how the showrunner began his response, which will likely give relief to anyone worried that things are getting hyper-gore.
It has definitely broadened our reach. I am very aware that as teenagers they watch this show, and now I am more aware why my children who were born in this show are now of high school age. And even if they haven’t seen it, because I think there has been a reaction for them, [where] They knew I wrote something scary and they never wanted to be a part of it – their friends see it. I think it’s because I’m aware of it, but I never wanted us to get into Full Rated-R, more violence, that it suddenly felt like a very different series. But we’ve been living in the world longer, and that’s why it’s almost as if you could live and breathe in this space, and it can be a creepy space to live in.
This feeling of newfound sensitivity later in life is something many parents can likely sympathize with, as certain protective instincts come into play that weren’t as prevalent before. But even if Messer doesn’t want to Criminal minds: evolution to become visually more horrifying for anyone streaming with a Paramount + subscription , was apparently eager to raise the NSFW language threshold, especially when it came to Joe Mantegna’s Rossi. In his words:
So while I don’t think you’ll be surprised if the graphics are worse, or something like that, there is language that I think is very appropriate, although some may find it inappropriate. I think the frustrations these heroes experience and deal with deserve a few words they released in these early episodes. Especially the character of Joe. It looks normal. It seems like they always would. So that part excites me a bit, because I feel the dialogue is more authentic in the sense of law enforcement.
Although she hasn’t been that specific about the kind of language she’ll use Joe Mantegna’s Rossi in Criminal minds: evolution, it’s probably easy to assume it will be a little louder than “son of a bitch” and other CBS licensed languages, if not very often. And there is no need to speculate about Mantegna’s comfort with the use of such obscene language, either, as he followed Messer’s thinking by saying:
Quite normal for Joe, so it’s a short stretch for me.
It’s intriguing that Rossi is the only referenced character who turns blue with some dialogue. Paget Brewster’s new natural look because Emily Prentiss doesn’t necessarily lend herself well to dropping F-bombs in the heat of emotion, even though I feel The surprise return of Kirsten Vangsness as Penélope García may be ripe for some interesting additions to dialogue, especially when her hair is the most striking .
Elsewhere on the panel, Erica Messer shared that Joe Mantegna’s character in particular is going through some personal problems that will have a ripple effect on the rest of the BAU team. So while I’m not too thrilled to see Rossi get in trouble after the joyous wedding party that concluded the CBS run, I now expect to see the crew chief call someone a son of a bitch at least once per episode. Fantastic bonus points if you use Fat Tony’s voice The Simpsons.
Criminal minds: evolution will premiere the first two episodes of its ten-episode season on Paramount + on Thursday, November 24, which is Thanksgiving for those who don’t have a schedule at hand. you can find the 15 previous seasons (opens in a new tab) also there to catch up before the new story begins.
