Warning: spoilers ahead for episode 17 of Law Season 22, entitled “Bias”.
Law took on the case of a murdered defense attorney in “Bias,” and the stakes were even higher than usual because of Nolan Price’s involvement as more than just an assistant district attorney. Not only did she find the body of her friend after she was late for their date at the park, but she didn’t reveal that she was romantically involved with her until the truth came out of her when he was at her helm. . While Maroun was able to close the case for him and get a guilty verdict, Price still did what actor Hugh Dancy describes as a “terrible thing”. He reads on for his “Bias” breakdown of an interview with Gossipify!
Hugh Dancy spoke to Gossipify about Nolan Price in this week’s episode and how the case would get quite “personal” for him. character to start breaking your own rules . The star had yet to see the episode when we spoke, but she shared her thoughts on what it was like playing Price on the other side of the witness chair in a trial, saying:
That was really fun for me. I haven’t seen the episode yet, so I’m very curious to see how it goes. I liked that not only was he the guy who understands exactly where the other lawyer is coming from because he does the same tricks himself, but also that Price hid things that are always bad for a witness. and it’s a terrible thing that prosecutors do. [laughs] I was literally on the bench.
Nolan Price knows better than to do much of what he did in this episode, but he crossed the line because he believed he was the DA’s best hope for getting justice for Rachel Bender after her murder. It wasn’t until the defense attorney presented evidence that Price had been involved with Rachel years ago that it became clear how biased he was in wanting to take the case to court. When I pointed out to the actor that fans would be watching opposing counsel perform the kind of legal tricks Price would normally do, Hugh Dancy replied:
Exactly, exactly! I usually have to get the rug out from under people’s feet. It was funny that this happened to me.
Even before the truth about Price’s past relationship with the victim came to light, he and Maroun had an uphill battle. They were trying to put a judge behind bars for murder, which didn’t exactly put them in favor of the presiding judge. Price only made matters worse when he asked the trial judge to recuse himself when the lawyers met him on camera. Hugh Dancy explained how different it was from the average episode, saying:
Anyone who watches Law & Order on a regular basis will know that when we walk into the judge’s room, 95% of the time, it’s a huge loss to us. [laughs] because having something to overcome, really, usually doesn’t go the way you want it to. So it looked familiar in that sense, but much worse.
ADAs rarely get the news they expect by joining the judge on camera, especially if the meeting is relatively early in the episode. Filing for a challenge pretty much guaranteed the odds were stacked against you, and there’s no guarantee you would have gotten your guilty verdict if it weren’t for breaking the rules a bit.
Maroun clearly wasn’t happy with how they got their verdict, though the two they have a strong dynamic (with some notable exceptions ), and the whole situation revealed a lot more about Price than Law had given before. So, did the actor enjoy delving into the character’s backstory more than usual? Hugh Dancy explained:
Yes, I really did, because I like that Price is on the side of law enforcement. He’s not that common in real life. It’s usually the other way around. People start out as prosecutors and go to defense because it pays more. This is what I discovered. He went the other way on principle, so anything that adds a little insight into who he is is fun to me and only ups the ante.
Interestingly, although Price is Maroun’s boss, Law revealed more on the character of Odelya Halevi and the shading compared to the one before “Bias”. After this episode, her backstory was much more enriched. According to the actor, he didn’t know anything about Price’s story like fans knew before this episode. Dancy said:
I don’t know anything about Price! [laughs] That’s the nature of Law & Order, isn’t it? You don’t go online expecting to explore a rich and complicated backstory. You may have things that you invent yourself, but really, these are the episodes that [come] from time to time and I learn it almost simultaneously with the others.
Want Law continue delving into Price’s story into season 22 and/or beyond (assuming Renewal news will come sooner rather than later. )? Only time will tell on that front. It’s still a procedural show, with the cast investigating and prosecuting a different case every week. Yet the show also revisited Maroun’s unresolved feelings about the loss of her and her sister Shaw’s struggles with the NYPD after leaving a law career, so it’s entirely possible we’ll get more information on Price’s story in the future.
