Taylor Swift and Kanye West’s story has been more than tense. Despite being two completely different artists, they have crossed paths several times over the years. Due to a long list of difficult interactions between Swift and West, the two have not been on good terms. However, it appears West recently identified some common ground between him and Swift and expressed it in an Instagram story.
The Instagram post is a surprise, as Taylor Swift and Kanye West’s last public interaction was years ago, and a far from positive interaction. In this post, however, she sympathizes with Swift in her plight of owning her own music catalog. She also refers to how her main catalog is purchased without her consent:
The “You Belong with Me” singer signed a deal with Big Machine Records when she was just a teenager. She recorded six studio albums with the label, but she signed with Republic Records in 2018 so that she could own the rights to her own music. In the same year, Big Machine sold the rights to the singer’s first six albums to Ithaca Holdings, owned by Scooter Braun, with whom Swift had a negative relationship. Not wanting to be bound by Braun’s control over her main catalog, she is re-recording her first six albums so that she can own all of her music. Of course, she isn’t the only one angry about her lack of control over her own material.
It is a clear similarity between the two artists, the mention of Ye by Taylor Swift on her social media is very evident. Their feud began in 2008 when Kanye West took the stage to interrupt his VMA acceptance speech. The two seemed to be reconciling when Swift presented West the Video Vanguard Award at the 2015 VMAs. However, that reconciliation was soured when West used the singer’s name “August” scornfully in his song “Famous”. Swift was upset by this and West’s wife Kim Kardashian posted a video showing Swift approving of West’s use of her name in the song. Years later, it emerged that the “evidence” from the video had been manipulated and that Swift was not fully aware of how her name would be used. The whole incident inspired Swift’s sixth studio album, Reputation.
Kanye West’s use of social media has recently been incredibly publicized and controversial. He received a backlash due to explosions against Kim Kardashian and her former in-laws. He also shot Pete Davidson while the comedian was out with the Kardashian.
However, this recent Instagram post appears to be a different twist for the rapper. Instead of chasing someone, he finds an affinity with them through shared experience. This could be his way of contacting Taylor Swift in an attempt to heal old wounds. I don’t know if Swift will be receptive, as she said her feud with West was emotionally damaging. However, Swift has reconciled with people in the past, so anything is possible. Perhaps Swift could even inspire West to re-register her main catalog. It would be quite iconic.
Fans of both will be eagerly awaiting news of these two, but in the meantime Taylor Swift will release her 10th studio album, midnight, October 21. Furthermore, jeen yuhs – a documentary series on Kanye West’s rise to fame – is currently streaming for Netflix subscribers.
