Without a doubt the biggest news of Star Wars Celebration this year was the reveal Lucasfilm is planning three new films it would span the entire length of the mythical timeline that every Star Wars movie is tied to. James Mangold will dig into the past to explore the origin of the Force. Dave Filoni will tell a story set in the present day of Star Wars (according to Star Wars movies in order ) which will connect the weft threads of the Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and then. And then Daisy Ridley will be back to the role of Rey for a photo shoot 15 years later Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. It’s a welcome return to the film business, and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy told Gossipify about the core idea that got them excited about movies again.
Katheen Kennedy attends Star Wars Celebration 2023 in London and attended a press line behalf Ahsoka , the new Disney+ series with Rosario Dawson. But she was open about anything Star Wars, including new movies that had been revealed. Explaining how Lucasfilm balances fan expectations with the kind of stories the company now wants to tell, Kennedy went on to reveal:
The interesting thing about Star Wars is that it’s a continuous story. These aren’t books we pull off a shelf or characters. We are actually telling a continuous story. So what interested us in cinema were the Jedi. We started talking and searching, how do we want to address these stories? How do we want to look at this Star Wars story now, and it was you, that we started looking at, where are the narrative pockets?
Going back to the eras that were revealed as part of the presentation saw that Lucasfilm wanted to delve into time periods like Dawn of the Jedi, Fall of the Jedi, Age of Rebellion, Rise of the First Order, etc. They are distinct periods that can be explored through different stories told on film. The Star Wars placeholders were the existing trilogies. But now in TV shows like the mateWe will visit a time when the Jedi were in power… e there were wookiee jedi . It’s crazy.
As Kathleen Kennedy explained:
We knew we were already doing this and we were exploring it on TV and on the air. And realize that it is already a reality. You know, five years ago streaming didn’t even exist. Now we are in depth. How does this relate to what we will do in the future? It is an evolutionary process.
Evolution seems to be related to the recurring theme of the Jedi. Which encourages me because during the run of the sequel trilogy, Luke was in hiding and Ben Solo was embracing the dark side of the Force. the Mandalorian was the hot new show in the Star Wars universe, but focusing on the Mandalorians, the Jedi took a step back. The newly announced films should bring the Jedi back to the forefront, whether it’s Mangold exploring the first person to be called a Jedi or Rey returning as a new Jedi Master, ready to lead Star Wars into the future.
