Brent Spiner has managed to appear in almost every major era of star Trek through his portrayal of various members of the Soong family. While the Soongs have been on the good side and the bad side Emigrate history with their scientific discoveries eventually played a key role in many stories over the years. That said, Spiner thinks there’s still more to his story and has some ideas.
I spoke to Brent Spiner about his long stint in star Trek and wondered if he ever wanted to play characters other than androids or members of the Soong family. What I was surprised to learn is that Spiner isn’t tired of playing Songs at all, and he spoke to me at length during our conversation:
I enjoyed playing all the Soongs and I think their story is really interesting if you look at everything. And I don’t think we’ve seen it all. There was a moment in season 2 where Picard meets Adam Soong at a gala and says, “You were the first.” Sure, he wasn’t the first because where did he come from? He probably had parents. I think that’s always been a question.
As Brent Spiner said, the Soong family had origins that go back before Adam Soong, and of course there is also a good period after him with other descendants that is not well explained. Sure, there are untold stories when it comes to the Soongs, but how far does it go?
If you’re Brent Spiner, there’s sure to be enough material to do it star Trek clock to cover Soong’s origins and identity. The actor discussed the questions such a series could answer, joking that he has pondered the answers to those questions over the years:
I think there is at least one season in the search for Soong’s identity. I mean, who is he really? Because he obviously has a Chinese surname. What damage? What’s the story? I would like to know. I have a few ideas, but I don’t know if any of them would be of particular interest to anyone other than me.
I haven’t asked for any of Brent Spiner’s thoughts on the Soong family, but I can personally say I’m interested in hearing his more detailed story in a Emigrate series or even a miniseries. As I said before, the Soongs are a pretty big part of Emigrate history, with its hands on everything from the creation of advanced intelligent synthetic human life to augmented humans. Such a family would certainly have a lot of interesting stories to tell and could be placed in some key moments of the timeline that a regular series might not touch.
An added benefit of making a Soong star Trek the series would also show the connective tissue between them and the characters we’ve met before on the show. As Brent Spiner said, there is a little bit of Soong even in the androids he created before Data’s latest incarnation, when he compared Adam Soong’s personality in picardy Story Season 2:
I loved it because everyone is connected in so many ways. I think Adam Soong from Picard season 2 is the origin of Lore DNA. It started with him, that particular aspect of humanity which is selfishness and narcissism.
It’s staggering to think of a Soong series considering that making one wouldn’t necessarily be closely related to Starfleet, but it might be the most interesting element. FOR star Trek a series like this would allow fans to see the world through the lens of a family that helped shape it and clearly believed there were flaws that needed to be fixed.
Of course, Brent Spiner isn’t the first star Trek cast member to kick off a series that sounds intriguing, but isn’t guaranteed. Michael Dorn is still working on launching a Klingon series, and many more picardy the actors are waiting picardy Showrunner Terry Matalas will be rehired to do a sequel series following its conclusion. As great as all these ideas are, they are still just ideas and are not currently part of today. Emigrate calendar. I hope they do one day, because I love the continued excitement we see in wanting to tell new stories in this franchise!
