I have some questions about Barbie Land before the Margot Robbie film

I don’t know about you, but Greta Gerwig Barbie it is my most awaited 2023 new movie release Not only have I loved everything the writer/director has tackled over the years, but she also seems like a really fun take on an iconic doll that played a big part in so many of our childhoods. . From the last one Barbie trailer is out, it has become clear that this movie is about to become a big deal. I mean, almost everyone has been jump in Barbie trend poster ! After more marketing presentations, I have questions specifically about Barbie Land.

They Barbie So far, the trailers have done a great job of introducing the tone of the film without really revealing the plot. All we really know is that it will follow Margot Robbie’s Barbie living in Barbie Land before she somehow decides that she wants to venture into the real world. When she leaves the world of plastics, Ryan Gosling’s Ken will also accompany him on her skates. After taking a look at the latest preview of the film, I have some fun questions about the world to come.

Why is everyone called Barbie or Ken?

One of the first things that caught my attention and is evident in the viral posters of Barbie, along with the trailer, is that besides Michael Cera’s Allan (based on the real life doll), everyone in Barbie Land is called Barbie or Ken based on their gender. In all character posters, it follows the format of “that Barbie” or “that Ken” and in the trailer, Margot Robbie calls everyone Barbie or Ken. As a child I clearly remember that there were different names for different dolls. For example, I remember that Barbie’s dark haired friend was called “Teresa”.

If you take a closer look at some of the characters in the film and compare them with real dolls, many of the Barbie to discard they play with specific dolls from the history of Barbie. I’m very curious to know what the Barbie Land lore will be and why they all have the same name.

Will we see Barbie’s parents and children in Barbie Land?

Also, I remember having younger Barbie dolls, like Barbie’s little sisters, Skipper and Kelly. They weren’t in the trailer, but I wonder if the film will give Barbie a family and if there will be children and Barbie parents as well. Perhaps in the vision of Greta Gerwig Barbie, are all the same age and have no family. This may be one of the reasons Robbie’s Barbie wants to explore life in the real world.

And Barbie’s feet?

Barbie opening up her trailer with this image of Barbie’s iconic feet was perfect. It’s always been doll design and I’m excited to see what jokes or gags can come out of this Barbie element.

Why is there an airport at Barbie Land?

As Barbie traverses Barbie Land in the new trailer, there are also a few things that have caught my eye. First, Barbie goes through an airport called “BAX”, which appears to be inspired by LAX in Los Angeles, California. Airplanes also fly over Barbie Land. Where are the planes going? Are there other Barbie Lands in the world to travel to, or is this some kind of way for Barbies to get to stores that humans can buy? What’s up with that?

Why does the Wizard of Oz appear in Barbie Land?

I also noticed an interesting detail that, in my opinion, not many have talked about. When Robbie’s Barbie crosses town, 1939 The Wizard of Oz play in the cinema. I wonder if Barbie watching this movie will be part of the storyline, because I can already see some comparisons between her life in Barbie Land and her life in the real world. If so, she would be an interesting plot device for the movie!

Issa Rae as president of Barbie

Is Barbie Land a matriarchy?

Returning to the posters, I found the main poster with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling interesting, the slogan is “She is everything, he is just a Ken”. Character posters show female characters and present them with additional labels such as president, doctor, mermaid, Nobel Prize in Physics, diplomat or lawyer. All of Ken’s posters say, “It’s just Ken” or something like that. It makes me think that maybe in Barbie Land, all the women are these dolls made and the men play the role of the housewife, or the boy anyway.

Also in the trailer is footage of Issa Rae’s president Barbie and a court of women behind her running things on earth. I’m curious how these scenes will fit into the company of Barbie Land in the film. What does it mean to be “just a Ken”?

How to get out of Barbie land?

Currently, Barbie somehow it gives me stepford wives AND don’t worry darling vibrations. I feel like Robbie’s Barbie could be living her fun Barbie life, but maybe she’s on an existential journey to discover who she really is, and venturing into the real world will be central to that. In the trailer, it seems like it’s easy for her to drive her pink car in the “real world,” but I wonder how dangerous that would be in the context of the film. Or is it normal for Barbie to walk away and just imagine a horror movie scenario? I don’t understand how Greta Gerwig is going to balance this great movie about a doll that kids like with the deep themes she often puts into her own movies, but I have faith too!

Obviously I’m overanalyzing things, but it was fun to do with the marketing that was put in place for the film. Can’t wait to see all the creative elements of Barbie will come to life in the film itself on July 21.
