Dale finally gets close to Rose and Peter in episode 6, “Fathoms”, but the two manage to kill him. Devastated after finding his body, Ellen, who was also Dale’s lover, vows revenge. She would eventually meet her fate in the eighth episode when Rose pushes her off a crane. In the end, however, that wasn’t always the plan. Shawn Ryan revealed a television line that Ellen almost went first:
Hate…. There was a lot of discussion about who should come first, Dale or Ellen, and we actually wrote a few pages where it was Ellen who died at the end of [Episode] 6 and Dale survive, but we’re backtracked. It was always a question: “What’s the best story for Peter and Rose?” So there was a debate about that.
Both were ruthless (and even went so far as to steal a baby as part of a ruse), but some may have felt a little sorry for Ellen when they left her mate crying. Unlike Dale, she was eager to get away from her abusive life and start a family. This is why the TVLine interviewer felt it was probably best if he was the first. For example, Hawkins’ death is a big twist in the book and we saved it for the end of episode 2.
