After Harry Potter fan theories, Warner Bros. boss clarifies why footage was used to advertise TV show Max

Warner Bros. Discovery has been very busy this past week as it has released many details regarding its Rebranding HBO Max, soon rebranded This long-running reveal was accompanied by a slew of official announcements about upcoming content. One of the titles that has really caught the attention of the internet is the new one Harry Potter series, a reboot that was only reported last week. What really caught the attention of the public was that WBD promoted it using images, a logo, and music from the OG franchise. This has sparked some fan theories regarding the two continuities possibly being one and the same. Now, one of the streamer’s top management has provided some clarifications.

The notion of a Harry Potter The redesign seems very surprising to a number of fans, but it was probably even more unpleasant for them to see such familiar marketing material for what has been dubbed a reboot. Don’t let the iconic soundtrack by John Williams fool you, however, all is not as it seems. Amidst the swirling theories, Pato Spagnoletto, director of global direct-to-consumer marketing for Warner Bros. Discovery, confirmed that it’s a new take on wizarding world mythos. Apparently he and his colleagues used familiar sights and sounds for a different reason:

We are very happy that this franchise returns. It has really entertained a lot of us over the past 20 years. It’s so early, honestly, I don’t want to fool you one way or the other. We’re just starting the journey of what the content will look like, how it will be produced and filmed. And of course, the marketing point should reflect the actual content. So what we showed on screen was just an illustration of the story and its richness, and it’s not necessarily an illustration of what we intend to market and how we intend to market the new content.

Thus, the executive, who spoke with Variety sometime after the big Warner Bros Discovery speech, he says he and the marketing team were just trying to channel the gist of what had come before. And in doing so, they would pay homage to the beloved series directed by Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint for over a decade. Naturally, the company will not be able to rely on the family member for a long time.

As strange as it may seem, Rupert Grint guessed that months ago that a reinvention of the small screen would happen, and surprisingly, it worked. What we know about him Harry Potter TV series is that it will (obviously) feature an all-new cast that will likely include newcomers to play the young wizard and his friends. The project was also presented as a “faithful” adaptation of the books written by JK Rowling, which serves as the EP. WBD is also investing in this long-term, as it will tentatively air over the course of a decade.

Fans on social media shared their thoughts on the high-profile production, with many looking suspicious or confused. After all, the film franchise is incredibly iconic, so why try to update something that has already wowed audiences for years? Though I guess some might say it could help hook a new generation of Potter Fan.

We could argue all day about the merits of the training series, but other than that, it’s good to get some insight into your marketing materials first. I can’t say exactly what we will achieve with this new project from Max, but what I do know is that the producers have a big hill to climb.

Who wants to see the Harry Potter movies and the reunion special can be streamed using a Maximum HBO subscription .
