Sherlock Holmes 3 Director Explains Why Robert Downey Jr. Sequel Hasn’t Happened Yet Despite ‘Brilliant’ Script

No matter how many films he directs during the rest of his career, Robert Downey Jr. will always be associated with Tony Stark aka Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Any fan looking to see the Marvel movies in order It has to start with Jon Favreau Man of Steel, which featured the irresponsible playboy who discovers his brave side after taking a splinter to his chest. But outside of the MCU, Downey has also had great success as the legendary detective Sherlock Holmes in two Guy Ritchie movies, and I’m genuinely surprised Warner Bros. hasn’t moved mountains to keep the franchise going. Ritchie explained why you chose not to come back For Sherlock Holmes 3to those who have left the door open rocket Bar Dexter Fletcher. Only, Fletcher has provided an update on the sequel, and it’s far from positive.

rocket is another movie that deserves a lot more love than it gets. Taron Egerton, who played Elton John in the film, has been begging people to see it in theaters. But it didn’t work out so well Bohemian Rhapsody, leaving Fletcher looking for his next high-profile gig. He currently has the original film. ghost, available to people with an AppleTV+ subscription. And while promoting the Chris Evans and Ana De Armas romantic comedy, Fletcher sat down with ReelBlend on the state of Sherlock Holmes 3, which was once related to achievement. When asked if the planned sequel is still in development, Fletcher told the Gossipify podcast:

Not currently. The simple truth is that I worked closely with Robert and Jude, but especially Robert, for a while. And we got to a certain point, and then Covid hit. And that threw everyone into the air. These things are so delicate that trying to tie all these threads together in one meaningful place is now proving difficult. I’m busy. He’s busy. People are busy. It’s a good old thing. And I haven’t spoken to him in a while, so I don’t know where his appetite for it is. I’m sure there is, but how does he fit into your plan…because plans have changed. I can not answer. If I come back, I’d like to do it. I would very much like to see it. Because the script was great. And (Robert) is a genius, in my opinion.

Again, I don’t know why WB doesn’t send dump trucks full of money to Robert Downey Jr. and beg him to take on the role of Sherlock Holmes. Studios are thriving on franchises, and with the Fantastic Beasts movies stalled and DC rebuilding, WB could build on as much success as possible. The first Sherlock Holmes grossed just $500 million in worldwide ticket sales in 2009, and the 2011 sequel surpassed that number (according to Numbers ). You would assume that if RDJ was ready, the green light would be on.

Delving into his process, Dexter Fletcher explained:

We ended up working with a fantastic writer named Joe Penhall, who made a fantastic adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s The Road. … We had an amazing 10 days at Robert’s in the Hamptons with him, you know, Sherlock Holmes 10 days straight. It was like being in a little piece of heaven. It was so brilliant. And to see Robert and the way his mind works and the flips he could only do with that character was, like, wow. So yeah, I hope someday I’ll do it somewhere, if not with me then somewhere Robert will make this movie.

For now, the film remains frozen. Downey is the kind of actor who almost several upcoming films in his portfolio , and it looks like a script for Sherlock Holmes 3 is almost ready, should he choose to go that route. Meanwhile, Fletcher’s latest film ghost can be streamed on AppleTV+ starting April 21. Scan our list of details we know about the film while you wait for it to arrive.
