The new Amsterdam executive producer shares Freema Agyeman’s reaction to Helen’s role in the fifth season premiere

new amsterdam returned to NBC with a fifth season premiere that showed viewers that medical drama he might still be happy and festive despite the Absence of Freema Agyeman as Dr. Helen Sharpe, thus ending the relationship with Sharpwin. The episode found a way to give Max (and the fans) some degree of closure through a letter she wrote to her ex-boyfriend, with Agyeman making a vocal appearance to narrate and make it truly real. Speaking to Gossipify, executive producer Peter Horton explained how the actress reacted to the role of Helen and how she lent her voice to the letter.

In the letter, Helen made it clear how much her “dearest Max” and “sweet Moon” meant to her and that she sees their actions in the end of season 4 (transmission available in the peacock ) as “unforgivable”. But she also pointed out that the problems that kept her in London and kept her from marrying him were real and she just couldn’t get rid of them. It took Max most of the episode to realize that trying to solve his problems wasn’t helping, but he might not have gotten this far without his letter, narrated by Freema Agyeman.

While the executive producer David Schulner talked about dropping the clues During season 4, Helen didn’t go all right as they knew Freema Agyeman would be leaving, she was always happy to help with the season 5 premiere. Executive producer Peter Horton explained the logistics of making her voice work for the letter and how you responded to the request:

At that point Freema had left the show and returned to England. We approached and asked her if she agreed to do so, and politely [and] he said yes with enthusiasm. So we had to have someone in England there to help us and register it and have someone on our side on the phone and make sure we get what we needed, or on video I Assumed. And take it from there. He was very, very helpful, very helpful, very enthusiastic. We miss it, we miss it. Given the disappointment we all feel for not being with us, it continues in the same spirit in which we started our show.

The actress had returned to England, but the show didn’t need her on the American side of the pond for its narration of the letter. According to Horton, she was “friendly” and “enthusiastic” when she was approached, and the result was that fans received responses from Helen in her own voice. While the split isn’t what Sharpwin fans expected, Helen’s love for Max showed in Agyeman’s performance.

Now Max can really start what Ryan Eggold described as his healing process for season 5 and the end of the Season 5 premiere hinted that maybe getting closer to Dr. Wilder might be part of it. Of course, Max’s entire group of friends came forward to support him in times of need. Peter Horton went on to explain what was special about Freema Agyeman’s casting and contribution:

like David [Schulner] And I’ve said that from the start of the show, it was a cast of adults who were solid good people. And it was just happiness. A lot of times in shows you have to manage people, you know, and try to put out fires left and right and try to strategically change circumstances. It was just bliss. I mean, everyone on the show is adults and everyone on the show has a great spirit. And it also continues with Freema on the other side of the pond.

Not all shows can keep that many main cast members from season one to last, and the executive producer has had nothing but praise for them as season five returns and continues. Of course, many fans would prefer Season 5 not be the last (and it lasted over 13 episodes), but the premiere was proof that Max’s journey didn’t have to end on a sad note just because he lost Helen.
