Fans campaigned for a hypothetical Inheritance spin-off series, and after the latest episode, many seem to want more character details more than ever. For example, the question remains whether Jean-Luc Picard ended up in a relationship with Beverly Crusher or whether he got back with his girlfriend, Laris. In that regard, showrunner Terry Matalas has provided an explanation.
In one of the final scenes of the series, Jean-Luc and Beverly say goodbye to their son, Jack, as he prepares to begin his first Starfleet mission. It’s a sweet scene and makes you wonder if the two are a couple. I had a chance to speak with the producer and during our conversation I asked him if those last moments confirmed that the two were back together. Terry Matalas confirmed that the ending was meant to be ambiguous, but still expressed his opinion on the situation between them at the end of the series:
I think it’s open to interpretation as to how [their relationship turns out.] I think they’ve definitely become kind of a family. However, you call it open to interpretation, at least at this point. I think there are different types of households. There are divorced families. There are separate families… I think they are now definitely in each other’s lives on a regular basis.
So while he didn’t confirm their relationship status, the EP clarified that Jean-Luc and Beverly are co-parents as Jack begins his Starfleet career. Of course, since Jack is a young adult and begins his career far away, his parents raise him as adults would normally raise a child. Despite that, it’s really sweet to see them both supporting him.
It would be an understatement to say that fans have wanted to see Jean-Luc Picard and Beverly Crusher together ever since. Star Trek: The Next Generation. With that in mind, it’s understandable that many hope or choose to believe they’ll be together by the end of the picardy. However, if that were to happen, it would also theoretically mean an abrupt end to the main character’s relationship with Laris, which lasted from seasons 2-3.
During our interview, Terry Matalas pointed out that the crew didn’t have time to film Picard walking home with Laris, and even if they did, Orla Brady (who plays the latter) would have already returned to her house. in Ireland. . place. I think there’s a subset of fans who would like to see that scene, and I think there’s a large group of fans who would rather see her be with Beverly. And I think both are valid answers, and I think, you know, the good ending is whichever you choose.
At this point it looks like we would need a file picardy follow along for straight answers on how things are going with Jean-Luc Picard, Laris and Beverly Crusher. Personally, I’d like to think that even though Bev and Picard have rekindled their friendship after being apart for years, they’re smart enough not to pursue another relationship. After all, it seemed Beverly’s past feelings about their relationship revealed that it wasn’t as scenic as some might have imagined and that it might be best they broke up.
Time will tell if Paramount+ season ticket holders will be able to experience more adventures with the two beloved characters. Although given the large number of upcoming projects star Trek shows and Michelle Yeoh’s recently announced Section 31 movie, it looks like it might be a while before we can speculate.
