The Amazing Way Evil Dead Rise pays homage to Sam Raimi’s “classic” car from the original

SPOILER ALERT: The following article contains minor spoilers. resurrection of the wicked dead. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, continue at your own risk!

Any fan will tell you that this is not good evil Dead movie unless there is seriously grotesque chainsaw-focused action, and resurrection of the wicked dead it certainly delivers, but it’s also hard to miss a key change the film chooses to make to said weapon. Sam Raimi’s original trilogy and Fede Alvarez’s 2013 reboot feature bright red chainsaws, but the new film has Lily Sullivan’s Beth wielding a dull yellow chainsaw. At first glance, this might seem like an odd choice, as it’s a noticeable change in an important piece of iconography, but there’s a specific reason, and it’s due to a fantastic easter egg implanted by director Lee Cronin.

The director himself told me this when I had the opportunity to interview him earlier this month during the virtual press day of resurrection of the wicked dead – although the topic was raised, it was not about chainsaws, but another important part of evil Dead Story: Sam Raimi’s 1973 Oldsmobile Delta 88, nicknamed “The Classic” (not only appearing in the three original films evil Dead trilogy, but all the films that Raimi directed). The vehicle is not used resurrection of the wicked deadand when I asked Cronin if he had talked to Raimi about using it, he explained why he felt it didn’t fit well with the film he was making:

I never got the impression that Ellie as a character was driving around in a 1970s Oldsmobile Delta. So it didn’t quite fit the story. But because of my love of the franchise and my desire to connect the dots and connect things, I chose a car that was right for her to be her mother: this gorgeous Buick Roadmaster. But she has something of the same charm as the Delta, in her own way.

The Buick Roadmaster in the film is also yellow, which recalls the Delta 88, but the director referenced “El Clásico” through the chainsaw design. Continuing, Lee Cronin told me that the gun is not just any shade of yellow, but the exact same one used to paint the 1973 Oldsmobile. Cronin said:

The chainsaw, which was normally red, is actually the color of the Oldsmobile Delta in this film, the exact shade it matched. So if you go back and look at the chainsaw, you’ll see the color tint of the Delta rendered on screen. And there are so many other Easter Eggs like the ones in this movie, so it takes multiple views and a lot of searching to discover them all.

You can see the color scheme in the tiled photos below the resurrection of the wicked dead Chainsaw and Delta 88 the wrong death:

As Lee Cronin pointed out, the yellow chainsaw is just one of the many Easter eggs included resurrection of the wicked deadfrom profound nods to earlier films (such as the Necronomicon, which is one of three volumes) to references to other horror classics (including Stanley Kubrick’s). the splendor).

Critically acclaimed resurrection of the wicked dead It’s now playing in theaters worldwide and just had a fantastic opening weekend at the box office.
