Spoilers ahead for episode 19 of Law and order: organized crime Season 3, titled “A Diplomatic Solution”.
The third season of Law and order: organized crime come to a conclusion and crossed with special unit for victims in May, but the stakes were already high on “A diplomatic solution” because Boss first episode after a short hiatus. . Initially, Diya’s concerns seemed to extend only to protection and speech delivery, keeping tabs on her assistant after the car exploded, and keeping the peace between Stabler and those at the Indian consulate who weren’t thrilled to have him around. The twist came at last, when Stabler realized he was part of a plot to smuggle the stolen tech out of the country and bring it back to India.
The revelation came after the majority of the episode featured a pretty strong dynamic between Diya and Stabler, with Stabler ultimately failing to report her for the attempted robbery, instead giving her a chance to escape prosecution in the States United using the technology before boarding his plane. India. Stabler still believes he will face repercussions in India, calling his choice of him a “diplomatic solution.”
It was a tricky ending to what Diya initially thought was a simple task. Karen David spoke about the situation that led Diya to the decision she made and said:
Believe [Diya] he sincerely believed that she was there on a particular mission and that it was to make a speech on behalf of the government, and that was her job. It was her duty, and then somewhere towards the end of the episode we see things take a turn. You are now in a compromising position to say the least, where you now have to try to correct a very complicated and difficult situation, and at the same time play the diplomat.
Diya didn’t have many options at the end of “A Diplomatic Solution” and no one she could trust to talk about her “sticky” situation. He couldn’t imagine that an assassination attempt would only be the beginning of his woes when he arrived in New York! This conundrum is part of what attracted the actress to her role, as David continued:
That’s one of the things that really made me love this episode and wanted to play Diya because it’s such a difficult position. [for] a diplomat, who should be this reliable source, this constant source, to keep the peace, to keep things calm and smooth, and how everything fell apart. The Plan A that she thought she was in suddenly becomes a completely different and confusing Plan B that she was not a part of and that she was unaware of, according to her. [She] she must find a way to save face not only for herself, but for her country as well.
Well, she was able to save face in the end, but only because Stabler decided not to sue her and offered a third option. Whether she can save face when she returns to India is another matter. All in all, Karen David was definitely playing a different kind of character than she was. in the afternoon, great Galavant !
The actress just had good things to say about working with Chris Meloni as Stabler, and went on to share his thoughts on whether or not Diya’s previous interactions with Stabler were sincere:
When we got close and I was talking to our amazing director and the writers, we were talking about it and I said what was really interesting and exciting to me was the idea that she really doesn’t know. She was there to complete a particular task, and how that plan changed and developed rapidly and how quickly she had to think on her feet. [would be] deeply, deeply disturbed and uneasy. She would have put her in quite an awkward situation that even just talking about it makes me uncomfortable, as it paints her as something else she might not be.
Organized crime it didn’t portray Diya as evil or weak, but rather trapped in a very difficult situation with no easy way out. She didn’t commit to smuggling stolen goods out of the country, and it wasn’t too surprising that Stabler realized something was wrong with her overprotective luggage. Karen David then noted Stabler’s comment about “a diplomatic solution” at the very end of the matter:
We know you come from a very powerful political family. She’s ambitious. But ultimately, when you sign up to be a diplomat, you have a duty and obligation to perform the duties that will represent your country to the best of your ability. I know it hasn’t been easy for her to be in that situation and try to get out of it, and try to work things out eventually. Much of this was made possible by Stabler. I love when he finally says “A diplomatic solution,” because it’s almost like a slap on the wrist, which is so cheeky and wonderful.
Trust Elliot Stabler to find a way to be cheeky after a case that almost went wrong! Stabler’s dynamic with Diya was such that it would be fun to see them together again on screen (AND Organized crime it has recently been refurbished ), but the chances of her returning to the United States as a diplomat don’t look very good after what happened. Karen David explained why Diya was such an interesting character to her:
It was very interesting for me to not go the obvious route where she immediately knows that, ‘Oh, I’m here, but it’s not really like that.’ He’s a bait for that. I thought it was much more exciting to play there. [as] What if he doesn’t know and finds out later? I like to let the viewer decide and let them draw their own conclusions too, so it’s like those books you read as a kid where you get to choose the ending. [laughs] Option 1 for this [or] Option 2, then go to this page and read. I feel like it’s like that kind of situation with this episode.
“A Diplomatic Solution” didn’t exactly have a happy ending for Diya, though it could have been worse, but Stabler may be on the verge of finding happiness after a sweet chat with her mother. He just wants him to be happy, and if everything we’ve seen of him in the 2022-2023 TV season has stacked up so far… well, the crossover with SVU and meeting Benson could be a game changer. While the last meeting on the screen it was more than a little complicated!
