With 70 years between Disney’s animated iteration of Peter Pan and today the time has come for House of Mouse to revisit JM Barrie’s classic fairy tale. In by David Lowery Peter Pan and Wendy , the story turns into a deeper backstory for Captain Hook beyond simple revenge. Putting Hook’s look together was a very collaborative, slow and painstaking process, and it was also very much tied to his background, which we obviously delved into in this build. And, initially, after many exchanges and shared emails, David [Lowery] he took a picture of me when he saw Hook. And of course because of that huge piece of metal strapped to his right hand, he decided he was probably going to get scars from where he’d ever punched himself in the face, or even in battle. And the eye was one of them, the idea that he had, that he had damaged his eye, seemed appropriate.

As Law shared, they thought the hacker must have injured his eye at some point in a moment of forgetfulness. He was like, ‘what’s the convenience of having a big rusty hook for a hand?’ No, you know, sometimes you forget you have it, you just think I’ll scratch my eye. My eye itches and a terrible accident occurs. So he’s been hands on, but he’s also added to flesh out this character and help us understand where he’s from and what he’s been through.

With Jude Law’s Captain Hook and Peter Pan getting a more grounded origin story, the Peter Pan and Wendy to discard it’s also notably directed by Ever Anderson’s Wendy Darling, who has a great arc throughout the film that challenges some of the previous iterations of the classic character. Meanwhile, Yara Shahidi plays a sweet Tinker Bell and Jim Gaffigan is Hook’s right-hand man Smee.
Peter Pan and Wendy it took seven years to develop, with David Lowery and co-writer Toby Halbrooks joining the project in 2016. The material is personal to Lowery, who previously told Entertainment Weekly when writing it that he “agonized over every small detail”. to make it a strong fit. Obviously, this movie really paid attention to those little details, and you can see it for yourself in Disney’s latest live-action remake, now streaming on Disney+.
