Some mild SPOILERS are on the way Peter Pan and Wendy now transmit with a Disney+ subscription .
While he never really intended to grow into his heart, Peter Pan has also been around for over a century. And, when you’ve been in pop culture for this long, the classic character has undoubtedly seen some tweaks in lore to him along the way, most recently with David Lowery. Peter Pan and Wendy. The last one Disney’s live-action remake of an animated film it’s a more grounded take on the story, with some notable changes from previous iterations.
When Gossipify spoke with the writer/director about the new adaptation of the Peter Pan story, we discussed a popular character choice that he opted not to include. between the originals Disney movie from 1953 , to the 2003 cult hit, there was an air of romance in the past between The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up and Wendy and Tinker Bell. Lowery shared his thoughts on the matter:
I just felt it wasn’t necessary. I just said, let’s get this off the table and let it not be a part of this story. If the characters had been a bit bigger it would of course have worked, but I think it was necessary.
Remember the animated version? Tinker Bell has been described as a jealous fairy who refused to share Wendy. Then I feel like in several iterations I’ve seen of Peter Pan, the actors seem to like Wendy, even though they’re basically recruiting her as the mother of her and the Lost Boys. Weird vibes, huh? It makes sense that Lowery decided to skip the popular choice of characters for her version.
They Peter Pan and Wendy to discard he’s also mostly quite young, as he pointed out. What makes this release special is Jude Law’s exploration of Captain Hook, who Law spoke extensively with Gossipify even during the interview. Additionally, the film delves into the messages of what it means to grow up. The scene where Wendy’s “happy thoughts” on the table imagine herself growing old was a particularly important part of the film, as Lowery shared:
It was really this idea that was very central to me, that her happy thoughts had to include the idea of growing as a character. He needed to feel comfortable and look forward to the potential that comes with growth. And so, at the beginning of the film, we have him remember happy thoughts of him, and everyone looks back. They’re all from when she was younger, when she was a little girl, and they’re at that moment where she thinks maybe it’s at the end of her life and she’s going to have to jump off that plank. She thinks of all the things that await her impatiently. And it was really important and meaningful for me to include that.
Peter Pan is just one of those stories that will always be told by new filmmakers with new perspectives on the material. When it comes down to it, general audiences are mixed in David Lowery’s film. Peter Pan and Wendy. Just Gossipify Peter Pan and Wendy revision gave the film a positive rating of 3.5 out of 5 overall, saying it “misses some opportunities to possibly elevate the material”, but also found it “quite entertaining”.
