When Zack Snyder ventured into storytelling in the Movies about the DC universe its portrayal was intended to be different from the films that preceded it Man of Steelespecially the sweet tribute to Richard Donner that was Brian singer superman returns . As Kevin Smith wisely pointed out, Superman (in the film) gets through the entire film with almost no punches. It’s a choice, that’s for sure. So Snyder leaned heavily in a different direction, adopting a more mature view of the Man of Steel which tells the classic story of an immigrant from an alien in Kansas, but raises big philosophical questions about how humanity might react if they knew there was an alien among them.
Needless to say, it gets dark and violent. and at the end of Man of SteelSuperman (Henry Cavill) and his adversary, General Zod (Michael Shannon), they fought to the death …leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. This has led some to conclude that Snyder was trying to turn Superman from normally a beacon of hope into something angrier. But when he comes up with this theory after a Man of Steel screening in Pasadena, the director took a step back and clarified:
My take on Superman is that I obviously don’t want to piss him off. He’s more concerned about the Earth, because the Earth is in his way than he is. And the whole idea of Superman in the iconographic form of him is that… the potential is for him to have no problems, right? He is a God on Earth and he can do pretty much anything he wants. And we really don’t have anything, we don’t have much to say about it. What is Lex’s problem with him. And by the way, Batman’s problem with him. So for Superman, the real job is to get him into trouble, right? This is Superman’s job. Take it, whether it’s romantic issues, like he can’t love the girl he loves. Or whether it’s moral conundrums about your role when it comes to interfering or not in the lives of humans. All the issues that, you know, are against his father’s wishes, and all the things that we all go through, in one way or another, on a small scale as human beings. It’s really the job of making the Superman movie relatable. Because otherwise, as you can imagine, you could easily fall into a space where Superman, unless you really push yourself to come up with scenarios where he’s doing hard stuff… you want to be where he’s, emotionally, supposed to. Take care of the your own humanity. And I think that was the point of the film.
How to make a god “identifiable”? It’s a tricky question whenever a director tries Superman as a plot device. James Gunn will be next to face this superman conundrum when he brings his own Superman: Legacy on screen in 2025, part of a first chapter of the DC films which will establish a new universe for Warner Bros.
However, as Snyder points out, he and Gunn (along with Singer and Donner) are just individuals in a long line of people who will have the chance to share the Superman mythology with fans for generations to come. like him Man of Steel director said:
We all know what’s going to happen. There will be another Superman and Batman origin film. And even what we’re talking about now, they’ll be one after that. It’s something cyclical. It’s like some kind of Matrix universe, where everyone meets at the architect and he tells them, “No, you’re not the first!” You are like number 10,000! It does not matter. Is fantastic. I am happy to be third in the 1000 series.
As fans pointed out at the SnyderCon event, for them, Snyder’s portrayal of Superman remains their favorite. We’ve included Snyder’s comics in our list of The 30 best superhero movies to date , then start arguing if we did it right. And she starts thinking about where James Gunn is Superman: Legacy it could drop down those charts, when it hits theaters in a few years.
