In the yard, on the bike, at work… Why sunscreen isn’t just for the beach

Skin cancer, aging skin, spots, wrinkles… Throughout the year, the sun attacks our skin. Which requires attention 365 days a year, not only on the beach, not only in summer.

It is a well-known reflex of those who like to walk on the beaches: periodically apply a good layer of sunscreen to avoid unpleasant sunburn. If this gesture is usually associated with tanning sessions, specialists believe that you should not wait until you are at the water’s edge or in summer to protect yourself from UV rays. And thus avoid its devastating effects: skin aging, spots and melanomas.

Catherine Gaucher, a dermatologist and venerologist, explains to BFMTV.com that it’s all a matter of age, location and duration of sun exposure. Babies and young children, for example, it is important to protect them all year round with a suitable cream and only expose them to the sun “for a little while”. And this particularly in summer, although the advice is valid almost all year round.

In summer, for adults, it is necessary to systematically counteract both types of ultraviolet radiation. A high index sunscreen is recommended as soon as there is prolonged exposure to the sun: cycling, walking, working by a window, etc. However, the dermatologist laments the tendency to spread the products too much to limit the effect of greasy and white veil, which de facto reduces their effectiveness.

skin aging

Sun protection is not limited to the months of July and August. If you generally don’t need to go for a 50-rated sunscreen in mid-November, a product that offers 15-30 protection is still recommended. Nowadays, most day creams contain a UV index, which can be checked at a glance on the label.

“After 30, it is important to protect yourself all year round to limit skin aging. I recommend aiming for the back of the hands, the face and the neck, the parts that are not covered by clothing”, explains Catalina Zurdo.

For people who work in an office and are generally protected from the sun, a single application in the morning is sufficient. “If you work outside, you have to put it back in the afternoon,” she insists. Important point, even when the sun is hidden by clouds, the rays are present.

“UV protection is always compatible with makeup,” recalls the specialist.

endocrine disruptors

Chemicals every day from childhood to old age, wouldn’t it be disturbing for health? Lotions contain endocrine disruptors, substances that can alter the normal functioning of our hormonal system. These elements are also found in food, through pesticide residues, for example.

For the dermatologist, don’t worry. This is the risk-benefit balance. When products are applied to a “tiny surface”, ie only exposed parts, the risk is “minimal”.

On the contrary, the dangers of exposure without protection are not negligible, in particular the probability of suffering from skin cancer. So there is no reason to avoid full screen.
