“I have an organ from my mother inside me”: a third uterus transplant carried out successfully in France

The 30-year-old received the organ donation from her 57-year-old mother during an operation that took place without incident at the Foch de Suresnes hospital, in Hauts-de-France, Seine. She now hopes to be a mother.

A new surgical feat. As announced this Tuesday morning in a statement by the Foch hospital in Suresnes, a third uterus transplant has been successfully performed in France. According Inter of France, As information revealed in the morning, the operation, which lasted 18 hours and took place on October 21, required the mobilization of 20 caregivers under the leadership of Jean-Marc Ayoubi., head of the department of gynecology, obstetrics and reproductive medicine at the Suresnes hospital.

Océane, 30, suffers from Rokitansky syndrome (MRKH), a disease whose main symptom is the absence of a uterus at birth and which affects one in every 4,500 babies.

“Pretty strong as a symbol”

Despite this disadvantage, the young woman wants to have a child. Here comes Gaëtane, her 57-year-old mother, who suggests uterus donation.

“I have always been very confident and when I saw the news about the first uterus transplant in France, four years ago, I offered mine to Océane,” she tells France Inter.

In an interview given to the same medium, Océane takes stock of her mother’s gift, as well as the symbolic meaning it has. “I still have an organ of my mother inside me, which is a pretty strong symbol,” she says.

“I told myself I would never have children. It was very hard. But I always had friends who informed me about the progress of the research,” she adds.

The first two transplanted women who became mothers

Océane can now see the future in a more serene way. And there are many reasons to be optimistic about the possibility of having that child that she so wants, since the first two women transplanted in the same way in France are now both mothers.

In February 2021, the first transplant woman gave birth to her first child, before having a second in February 2023. Both babies are in perfect health. At the end of October of this year, the second transplant patient, Anaïs, gave birth to a girl at the Foch hospital, she indicates. The Parisian.

“I couldn’t believe it. I told myself: he’s here, he’s breathing, he’s fine. I never thought these transplants would be so successful,” she explains ecstatically.

For his part, Jean-Marc Ayoubi, quoted by the Ile-de-France newspaper, hopes to “perform two more transplants next year” and calls for a simplification of the selection criteria for volunteer patients.
