“I am disabled for life”: women victims of pain related to their urinary implant testify

A urogynecological implant caused disabling complications in at least 80 patients who filed a complaint with the Paris prosecutor’s office. Victims describe excruciating pain.

Stab wounds, pain worthy of childbirth or the feeling that your insides are “being ripped out.” Three women who suffered complications after having a urogynecological implant placed spoke to Sud-Ouest to share their ordeal.

Three patients operated on in the same Pau clinic after organ descent were placed in a subuterine sling or “TOT”. Sometimes without even being informed.

Paula, Annabella and Maria-Céleste have experienced or continue to experience serious complications after the installation of this device. A pain that they fight for the medical system to recognize, with some doctors going so far as to suggest that their suffering is only “psychological.”

80 complaints filed

The symptoms, however, were very real. “It’s like a birth, just as violent but everyday,” Annabella confesses to the regional newspaper, adding that she had to endure twenty urinary infections in six months, at the same time that she was forced to give up her intimate life because of it. unbearable pain.

“My bandage was too tight and I was disabled for life,” says Maria-Céleste, 70, who had surgery in 2011 and has been suffering ever since.

These three victims are not the only ones who have complications. In total, 80 complaints were filed against X before the Paris prosecutor’s office, according to the four Parisian lawyers in charge of 78 of the complainants.

A lack of information

Hélène Patte, one of the plaintiffs’ lawyers, emphasizes that these complaints are not “directed at anyone in particular” and specifies that “the investigation has just begun.” According to the regional newspaper, other victims could follow.

“This implant is subject to a moratorium in the United Kingdom, Australia and Ireland as well. The polypropylene device goes under the urethra to support it. When the perineum fails, sometimes there are so many adhesions with the other organizations that it is impossible to remove it,” explains the one who works in the Paris bar.

The High Health Authority (HAS) estimates the proportion of patients subject to complications at 2.8%, while the group of French victims estimates it at 10%. One of the objectives of this lawsuit is to gain more transparency for women who require this type of surgery. Patients would not have been informed about the possible adverse effects of these devices.

“In the event that there are 1% adverse effects, this figure must be communicated to the patients before the intervention,” support the plaintiffs’ lawyers.
