Bronchiolitis: hospitalizations rise 42%, doctors call not to overload the ER

Several hundred children have been seen in the emergency room in recent weeks for bronchiolitis. As the virus circulates, health professionals are asking hospitals “not to rush.”

The spread of bronchiolitis started very early this year. Four regions are already in an epidemic situation: Hauts-de-France, Île-de-France, Occitanie and New Aquitaine. Public Health France even fears the pressure on pediatric services in the coming weeks.

And the increase in cases is felt in the office of Christophe Batard, a pediatrician and member of the French association of ambulatory pediatrics.

“Parents bring their little infants to us, they are very worried, because their infant coughs, he does not necessarily have a fever and he is a child who does not eat well,” he explains to the microphone of BFMTV.

An increase in cases

This increase in cases is usual at this time of year, but the situation is such that Public Health France recalls the importance of barrier gestures to limit the circulation of the virus. During the week of October 3-9, 659 children were hospitalized for bronchiolitis. An increase of 42% compared to the end of September.

“The first step parents have to take is not to go to the hospital,” physiotherapist Didier Evenou said on the BFMTV microphone.

“You don’t have to rush to the emergency room, but go quickly to a doctor or pediatrician in the city, who will prescribe physiotherapy or not,” he explains. On the other hand, if your baby is considered to be at risk, or is less than 3 months old and has a fever, it is recommended to go to the pediatric emergency room.
