Alcohol consumption continues to fall in France, but remains at a “very high” level

According to the latest French Public Health barometer, published this Tuesday, January 23, the French consume less alcohol in general. But “disparities” can be observed on a regional scale or by gender.

The French consume less and less alcohol, but health authorities continue to recommend “preventive actions.” This Tuesday, January 23, Public Health France (Spf) revealed its new barometer that presents an overview of alcohol consumption in mainland France in 2021.

“Long-term trends reveal a decline in daily and weekly consumption over recent decades, reflecting declines in sales volumes,” SpF commented.

According to the study, 39% of young people between 18 and 75 years old consumed alcohol every week in 2021, compared to 40% in 2017, 49% in 2014 or 62.6% in 2000. Daily, only 8% of the French drink alcohol. , far from 22.6% in 1995 or 10.9% in 2010.

Disparities by region and gender

Health authorities, however, raise “regional disparities.” For example, 11% of the inhabitants of Occitania consume alcohol daily, 10.2% in New Aquitaine, 7.9% in Brittany and 6.8% in Upper France.

Regarding significant occasional alcohol consumption (IPA), the Pays de la Loire consume the most with 22.6%, while the national average is 16.5%. They are followed by Brittany (21.6%) and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes (17.3%). Île-de-France (15%) and Hauts-de-France (14.8%) are in last place.

Consumption also varies by gender. Men continue, as they have for several decades, to drink more alcohol than women. In 2000, 77.8% of men aged 18 to 75 drank alcohol every week, compared to 48.1% of women. In 2021, the gap remained significant: 50.5% for men and 28.1% for women. 12.6% of men drank every day in 2021 compared to 3.8% of women.

SpF then concluded: “Alcohol consumption patterns continue to evolve and the implementation of preventive actions to reduce the risks induced by alcohol consumption remains necessary.”
