“Razor blades between the legs”: Anabela recounts her ordeal after having a urinary implant

Most of the victims were operated on because they suffered from urinary incontinence, sometimes related to falling organs. They filed a complaint for aggravated deception and involuntary injuries.

An operation and a life that changes. In 2021, 80 women filed complaints after after vaginal implant placement that have caused significant mutilations. Since then, a previous investigation was opened for aggravated deception and unintentional injury.

The majority of these women suffered from urinary incontinence or prolapse, that is, organ descent, and underwent surgery to place a “suburethral sling” or a “pelvic reinforcement implant” made of polypropylene, developed since the 1990s.

“Terrible pain”

Anabela Neto is one of them and tells BFMTV what happened. She underwent surgery in 2021 in Pau after organic failure. Her surgeon suggests installing this anti-leak implant, she agrees, but as soon as she wakes up, the patient is the victim of intense pain.

“My awakening was terrible because I actually had pain between my legs. As if I had a vice, with terrible pains, labor pains, razor blades between my legs,” he remembers, near our antenna.

According to her, before the operation she was not sufficiently warned about the side effects of such an implant. “I didn’t actually have informed consent, I didn’t know what it was, I didn’t know how they were going to put it on my body,” she denounces.

“I was impressed”

Thanks to an investigation and an appeal launched in 2022, the patient realizes that she is not the only one suffering martyrdom. “September 20, 2022 was when my life changed. I made a call on Facebook and was amazed because I was not alone,” she recalls.

Urinary infections, bleeding and pain, all the victims complain of the same ailments and hope to be recognized by the courts.

“There is less well done justice for women. Today we are optimistic because a specialized service has been contacted and things are moving forward, but unfortunately we think that the cause and the real reason why things are moving forward is because one of them, who suffered so much, ended his life,” Laure Heinich, lawyer for 78 plaintiffs, told BFMTV.

For her part, Anabela, who has difficulty moving due to pain, continues her convalescence with the help of a physiotherapist. However, the pain does not always go away despite exercise.

According to Médiapart, in 2021, 17,000 women had these strips implanted, banned in New Zealand and Scotland. According to France 3, between 2017 and 2022, the ANSM (Medicine Safety Agency) received 202 reports, which concerned 215 strips. In 70% of cases, partial or total removal of the implant was requested.
